Looking for a rifle maker recommendation for a full custom Mauser rifle. I have the the below rifle in .338 WM and would like a pair in some thing lighter, in .270 or .30-06 to complement it. Looking for workmanship, engraving and wood to match my .338.

Here are some pics of my .338. This particular rifle is made by Australian custom rifle maker D.J. Swann and the engraving is by the renowned Australian engraver Phil J Vinnicombe.

Tough to photograph black engraving on black background, but this is the best I could do.

Spoke to a few rifle makers south of the border, also looking for some Canadian options.

Thanks

I can't help you with the gunsmith recommendation, hopefully somebody else here can, but I just wanted to thank you for sharing the pics of your custom Mauser. What a nice rifle! :)

Thanks for sharing that picture.......that is what a classic rifle should look like, walnut and blue steel on a Mauser action congratulations on your taste.

obendorf..........If I may be so bold, I would not be choosing anything so mundane and pedestrian as a 270 or 30-06 for such a masterpiece of workmanship. May I suggest possibly the 280 Rem just to jump out of the rut that the 270/30-06 live in.
Your taste is impeccable sir and the execution on this "canvas" is indeed some of the finest art I have seen. I have some nice rifles but nothing that approaches this level of craftsmanship and art.

I'm with c-fbmi on the caliber choice except i would prefer another classic cartridge.......................7X57 Mauser.

Thanks every one for the help, glad you folks liked the .338.

Looked at both Ralphs and Lemieuxarmuriers website and both do outstanding work and are probably the best available in Canada. From the website I could see that Lemieux does an outstanding work of engraving and restoration.

Ralph's website provides details about pricing and options available for a full custom Mauser build and specializes in Mauser bolt and single shot falling block rifles.

You guys have also got me thinking about caliber choices. 7x57 Mauser aka .275 Rigby and 280 are now in the mix.

.338 has the head of an Australian water buffalo on the floor plate based on the heritage of the rifle. This one will probably have a moose based on the Canadian connection.

oberndorf....If you check trajectories the 280 with 150-160 gn bullets matches the trajectory tables of your 338 perfectly using 225-250 gn bullets, this is why I would suggest it but I also like the 7X57 which is very ballistically close to your 338 as well.
As to what to put on the floorplate, if I may again be bold enough to forward a suggestion, I would have a thin horn sheep put there. My reasoning is that if you were to go moose hunting you would indubitably take the 338. The lighter rifle more for lighter game like deer, sheep, elk, caribou and the like...........JMHO.

The only reason I was considering Moose was it is such an iconic Canadian animal. You have a valid suggestion that makes perfect sense.
