A fellow hunter and acquaintance has asked me what I figured one of his rifles was worth. It is a .338WM built on Remmy 700 action, Stainless barrel, Leupold dangerous game scope (I have to check magnification again). I believe that it sports a Browning Precision fiberglass stock. A rough idea would be good as he will probably ask that I list it for him. Thanks.

About $30, $40 if he throws in some brass. I'd be happy to take it off his hands;-)

Nice rig, we'd need to know what all work was done to the action, barrel maker, trigger work, etc. before guessing about value. Could be as low as $800 for a stock Rem action (they're cheap these days...)+cheap barrel combo, to as much as $2500+ if it's been squared and trued, match quality trigger and barrel, action pillar bedded, etc. Not counting the scope, of course...

Take this for what you paid for it...

It's tough to give a proper value without knowing the make of barrel and who did the work. That makes or breaks it.

To build:
Figure an action (ballpark) for $400.
Trued action? Who knows which means no.
Stainless barrel? So it's been tefloned? Powder coated? Might be $350 or $600.
Stock? If its' a Brown Precision, $550 with good pad and paint. Is that a retractable bipod in the foreend? Then it's probably a Clifton stock, more expensive than a Brown.

So you're looking at $1300 plus to build. Without any documented info on the builder, it's worth about as much as a new factory rifle. And unless it's built by a GOOD smith, that doesn't add much anyway.

Leupold bases/rings: $40
Scope: Gloss 1.5-5 is worth ballpark $350.

If it was my rifle, I'd be advertising it for about $1000 incl. bases and rings, and scope separately at $350. I'd feel lucky to get $900. Trust me from bitter experience, selling used custom rifles is not a way to make money.

Both you guys offer very good advise and I thank you very much. I will be getting more detailed info. on the rifle during my next visit.
