custom rifle!

.338-06. I like the .338WM I have, but only bought it because I couldn't find an 06. 2nd in line would be a stainless .35whelen.:)

It will be a single shot built on a 1885 action. 24" octagon barrel, receiver sight, straight grip with a crescent butt plate.
 
Likely a 257better Bob with an octagon barrel on a Browning 1885 action.
Or maybe a 6mmAI on a Browning B78.

Something small for sure, for the offhand rifle matches I enjoy shooting, and something that I could smacka deer with if I wanted.

A super heavy barrel on a pre-64 Winchester action. A thumbhole laminated target stock and a high power scope to match. And I would chamber it in one of these new fangled, long range cartridges like the 30-30 or 45-70. :D


Or a CRF action like the pre-64 in a cartridge like a 450 Nitro. ### deluxe walnut with ebony fore end and flush mount swivels. Flur-di-lis checkering and hand rubbed oil finish. A leather covered recoil pad and heavy duty sights, in a quarter rib and heavy front ramp style. Quick detach rings and bases, and a matching, leather covered case. It's a dream rifle, so I dream big. :p
 
I've been pondering this question forever, and havent quite come up with the answer, but I know the cartridge... A 358 winchester. Here is my problem.
Im left handed, but have adopted to shooting right hand boltguns well. Short throw bolts such as the brownings, Tikka's, sako's and even M77's work well for me. I havent had a left hand boltgun in about 3 years, and I've sat on the fence as to whether to get a leftygun again, or stick with a right handed action that works for me.
If it were a bolt action, I'd want a 20 inch barrel in a light contour with a light synthetic stock.
or, I've allways wanted a Ruger #1 RSI but build it in 358 win.
I've been leaning towards the #1, but havent taken the leap in any direction yet
 
I already own a couple of customs, but the one I like best- and makes the most sense to me- Is y 300WSM, built by Bill Leeper. (Who doesn't like WSM cartridges, so that makes it even better):D

I feel that if you are going to have ONE custom rifle built, it should be the one you carry the most, cartridge should capable of everything you hunt, action one that you like, made reliable- and the rest is whatever you want....

I like:

  • stainless rifles
  • CRF
  • Versatile cartridge
  • GOOD synthetic stock -not tupperware
  • Accurate
  • Smooth
  • Reliability is #1
  • fitted to you

So I asked (and he said YES!!!) Bill Leeper build me a 300WSM on a Mdl 70 stainless short action, wiht a Bansner stock and a Smith barrel...It is smmoooooth, accurate, and- RELIABLE.

And I can kill anything in BC wiht that. And it's not limited in trajectory, it works as well at 50 yards as it does at 500.

Same as if it had been a 30-06 or a 300WM...If you buy ONE custom gun, make sure it is for everyhting, and you carry it alot. It will give you more pleasure:):)

Stainless 700 actioned .257 Roberts with an Accurate Innovations chassis-bedded stock, either walnut or laminated. 24" sporter-weight barrel, final empty weight about 7.25 lbs or so. Leupold VX III 2.5 to 8 in a turn-in mount. Nothin' fancy, but I'd be pretty happy to hunt deer with that rifle forever.
Second choice....a slightly lighter version in .250-3000 or .250 Ackley.

Nice combo for sure, but I think you'll have trouble getting it at 7.25lbs.

I have a 257Roberts on a matte/blued 700 BDL long action, rebarreled by Bevan King with a 22" stainless bbl (mountain rifle contour) in a Remington TI stock with Talley LWs and a VXII 2x7 matte. It weighs just a shade less than your target 7.25lbs, unloaded.

Either way you will be very happy with your Roberts.

My current thought for a custom gun would be a mini-dangerous game rifle in .358Winchester.

It would be a Model Seven action, with laminated stock with a 20" cm bbl complete with barrel band swivel, express front & rear sights, QD rings on steel Weavers and a 1.5x5 VXIII.

.600NE double rifle.

Westley Richards, Searcy, Holland & Holland would be the companies I would check out to see what they can do. I know for certain Searcy would be cheaper and I understand their quality is second to none. I'd guess in the $45-50K range from Searcy.

I looked at Westley Richards site recently, just for ####s and giggles...
A .500NE double will run somewhere around $65-70K right now, so I need to either get divorced or win the lottery...

They don't show a .600NE so I am sure you'd be talking about a lot more money; $29,000 pounds as is.

Well I just had one built earlier this year by Guntech.

I wanted a Browning rifle and I also wanted a .338 caliber, but not a Win Mag. I remember Browning had produced some 338 RUM's but they had been discontinued and I had not found one floating around, so I started looking through the reloading manuals for something of interest. Looked up a 378 Wby and decided that was the caliber I would go with.

Went into Island Outfitters one day in January, and out of the corner of my eye a little gold ring catches my eye, I ask to see the rifle it is attached to and it turns out to be a Browning BBR in 7mm Rem Mag with a Vari-X III 3.5-10 AO and sling, so I asked around (gunsmiths) about this rifle and a caliber change, most of them talked me out of 378 Wby and after talking to Guntech a few times, he had me convinced on a 340Wby instead, and that was great I bought the Browning and a box of ammo and blasted the box down range before the surgery began. Had to try it out before changing it up you know.

So there I was, found a beautiful hardly used safe princess and was converting it into an awesome 338 caliber, right what I was looking for in the beginning.
Here it is wearing a Vari-X III 4.5-14 X 40 AO, fixed in nickel Burris signature posi-zee rings and well some stainless weaver Winchester Model 70 bases. Also sporting a 26.70" Gaillard stainless barrel, free floated and bedded action, trigger adjusted to around 2.5 - 3lbs. The muzzle is a 60 degree target style crown, very nice. Shoots amazingly well. The magazine is a standard long action magnum magazine with some work to fit the 340 shells in, still holds 3+1.

I haven't thought to much about the next build yet, but that doesn't have to happen anytime soon, this 340 is my current carry all rifle and will most likely be for a very long time.


Added July 13th @10:13am; I guess this is more of semi custom build, but my first nonetheless.

I would find a P-17 action, find a Douglas, or Shilen barrel, magnaport the barrel, find a McMillan stock, bed the action, find a 1x5 VXIII and chamber it in a 505 Gibbs!

Second choice would be the same in a 404 Jeffery
