well i have been "technically" working on one since nov '06 with the help & patience of jason at gunco. savage /stevens L/A, Pac-Nor 28" bbl *standard savage shank straight taper to .940 at the muzzle* in .300WM, choate USS stock *beleivie it or not i prefer the feel of it over the macmillian A-5* currently sporting a crapco 6-24x40, still trying to source a brake that will fit the bbl and look/act like the holland QDB. if i get hte gumption to build another one up i am thinking of buying a big bore lever and dressing it up

Well I just had one built earlier this year by Guntech.

I wanted a Browning rifle and I also wanted a .338 caliber, but not a Win Mag. I remember Browning had produced some 338 RUM's but they had been discontinued and I had not found one floating around, so I started looking through the reloading manuals for something of interest. Looked up a 378 Wby and decided that was the caliber I would go with.

Nice rifle, looks sharp. Killed anything with it yet??

i'VE ALWAYS THOUGHT A GOOD SWITCH BARREL RIG BASED ON ASQUARE BRIDGE MAUSER 416 REM MAG 300 WIN OR WTHBY & 257 WTHBY & YOU WOULD BE GOOD TO ANYWHERE ON EARTH

.444 built on a Mark V bolt action 20" bbl seated in a nice laminate stock with wrap around checkering. Blacked stainless. Topped with a 1.5-6X 42 Swavorski :D

Think I could get a .444 in AI?

Well, if i am paying for a gun like that, i would want to use it more often than a once a year season. I would probably build myself a 22-243 or 22-250 AI, on a rem 700 action, medium contour, 26" stainless fluted barrel, and a vx-3 or similar quality glass. would have the bullets spun at 1-9, so i could shoot 45 to 75 gr bullets and buts gophers and coyotes, probably would bur a barrel or two down, but whats the fun in not shooting them?

There's never been anything that I truly had a desire to have custom built since there are so many good and nice rifles out there that shoot very well. I guess that my replacing a trigger, dropping it in a custom stock and bedding it would kinda make a "semi"-custom.....right???

I've travelled the custom gun route a few times and most times something just didn't turn out as expected. Even when superbly crafted something just didn't meet expectations. You learn from that, but those mistakes are expensive to say the least.

However, you do get a pretty good idea of the features that you do like and that can be turned into a gem. If you play your cards right.

My favorite is a semi custom:
-LH stainless Model 70 action chambered for an 06 based cartridge (these actions feed this family of cartridges very well.
-Factory barrel turned by Bill Leeper to factory fwt contour.
-Trigger gone over by Bill Leeper.
-McMillan EDGE stock with Pachmayer decelerator.
-Williams Oberndorf bottom metal.
-Talley LW rings.
-Leupold FX II 6X36 with LRD reticle

I'll build two more. One in an identical chambering and configuration as above, and the other a 375 H&H nearly identical to the blueprint above.

Instead of spending thousands on the 'next' custom rifle, I think I'll spend a few thousand dollars on hunting trips and ammunition for my first custom rifle, 260 Remington

I loved my 700 lss mtn rifle in 260, but its pencil barrel heated up too quick at the range, and its 1:9 twist was sketchy with anything bigger than a long 140 grainer. I had this issues solved by a medium weight 1:8 twist Gaillard tube. Awesome rifle

PS, gone are the dual dovetails & VXII 3-9x40, replaced with Talley lightweights, and a FX-III 6x42 w/ elevation turret

Mine would have been a new barrel in 6.5-284 for another rifle... but got my new Rem. 700 Mtn LSS .260. After looking at todbartell's rifle, I think I'm right behind you on the new barrel. I think I'll hang onto the dual dovetails and VXII 3-9x40 for awhile though.

I saw a 7x57 in sports afield mag this month. It was on a model 70 action. It would take your breath away!!!!!!!!!! everything about it was awsome! I wish I owned it!

Dave.
