Custom SKS, AK influences.

"- It locks out the hammer until the bolt is in battery.
- it engages the trigger bar to the sear only when the bolt is in battery"

This is the part that WmMcLeod is talking about. The trigger and the rebound sear are acting independently from the rest of the rifle.
The SKS uses the disconnector and the bolt to keep the trigger bar away from the sear and a rifle like the FN FAL use the safety sear and the carrier to prevent out of battery discharge. The hammer is kept/locked away from the sear until the bolt is locked down.

I am not familiar with he TG operation on the AR15 style of trigger.
IF you were to ride the action forward and were to pull the trigger before the bolt locks down, what stops the hammer from falling?

Other than that looks nice.

Edit: Well googled it and I guess even in the AR15 TG there isn't anything except you trigger finger reaction time to prevent OOB firing. It's kind of a stand alone trigger group where it is highly unlikely anyone could squeeze, release and squeeze the trigger fast enough to drop the hammer early. So if the trigger sear and hammer engagement were to were down significantly enough the hammer follows the bolt best case scenario. Learn something new every day.

Being original and creative often brings out the negativity in those who lack the vision and ability to build their dreams .

There is No short supply of SKS's to worry about so build and enjoy your special , one of a kind rifle .

I think your doing a great job !!

More over you have been completely honest on your build , including what is working well and what still needs perfecting , Hat's off to you !!!!!

could not have said it better myself.

I gave up the sks many years ago. me and a buddy bought a pallet of them way back when allan lever was still around. I customized the livin hell outta some of those rifles on the "make it look like an AK" quest. hell, I don't even think internet was around then. They were D models mostly , with 30 round mags...... a lot easier to get the AK look and a way better trigger group with the D model mag release.
tho I do admire this project simply for the creativity , if "I" would do another AK /SKS creation, I'd start with a D model and it's trigger group.
I customize nearly every rifle I own and until just recently, every rifle I owned I built(all smithing included) myself (except my dad's .303)
tinkering can lead to great things and a life long satisfying hobby.
as long as yer havin fun is all that counts ;)

this looks like a pretty easy part to fab up if you've got some sheet metal, maybe 16ga? and a tig torch
would then just need a mag latch, pin and a spring...... could pirate those bits from an m14 trigger group I bet

looks very sweet dude! I hope it functions safely and reliably for you at the range. I'm sure you'll get a lot of head turning when you start shooting it.

I've been looking at a few converted SKS to AK and I must say that it is the best looking one so far. Moving forward the pistol grip make its awesome. That is what normally is betraying the convertion. Please keep us updated on future development and thanks for sharing.

One idea for you to make it more look alike as you seem to be a skilled welder. A friend of mine cutted the cocking handle from the slide and welded an AR trigger to replace it. It looked really much like and AK cocking handle.

I like the ideas stated above, very interesting, however i am not trying to replicate an AK, I was just going for a more "AK feel" I appriciate all the comments, as I said unfortunately i have not done anything to this at the moment, I am still trying to source some custom springs for the hammer. Once I track something down there will be a new range report, hopefully with better results. All of my guns have some form of customization on them, heck everything i own does. My crown vic doesnt look like any other ive seen, I dont like to have the same thing as the next guy.

As some people have stated interest in my unimog project I started a thread for that, you can find it here:

heres a picture of an SKS mounted in a unimog and a picture of mine.

Small update, I had the sks to the range today and fired 20 rounds flawlessly, then had 2 light strikes and another 20 rounds through it without issue. After my last firing I re-bent the hammer spring and it seems to have solved the issue, so I feel that a slightly stronger spring should solve all the issues. Next time I go I will take more ammo and make sure to video it.

I havent done much to this project, Its been functioning quite well so I havent wanted to mess with it. Heres a short video showing that it does in fact shoot, and hasnt blown up in my face.

cool work but the bayonet has to go. If you shave off the bayonet attachment you can sleeve the hole where the cleaning rod goes through and you can still keep it. Much cleaner look.
I also thought if it would be possible to put on an AK sight but the barrel thickness may be different.
