Anyone ever have a custom mold made? I'm thinking of trying to make a sabot type slug if I can get a mold made, and then try and find someplace to make the sabots. Seems like there may be a market for slug reloading components, at least based on the price to buy slugs ready made.

I know that will work, but I used to really like the BRI sabot slugs from years back, I was thinking of something more along those lines. I know there are molds available that are shaped somewhat the same, and use standard wads, but they seem to have issues with the tail partially crushing when fired. The only way I know of to stop that is to have a sabot that will fully support the slug until it leaves the barrel, but nothing seems to be available.

I bought a few great molds recently

I had a custom mould done for me out of regina. Boomers moulds. Nice product and great guy to deal with.

I can also recommend Accurate moulds. very nice stuff!! (I am a Machinist technician)

ive never really bought into the idea of sabot slugs and rifled barrels. if the cushion on the wads bugs you then just use the gas seal and shot cup and put fiber wads in between

Really? I would have thought they would work better with a rifled barrel. But I don't think it would change anything using a fiber wad, I think the slug base would still be damaged.

I've played around with loading solid lead slugs for my H&R, I started with a solid block of aluminum and a reshaped and sized drill bit (Blue Dot and standard wads and hulls)....
It's not perfect but works well enough. Once you get the diameter of the drill bit tuned to your barrel, (slug in wad is quite snug but the slug falls through freely on its own)
drill the hole as deep as you need to achieve the weight you are looking for in the alloy of choice. (mine's 100% soft lead) ends up looking like chewed bubblegum :O)
I will try to post pics of the mold and the slug when I'm home tonight.

sabot slugs will only stabilize in a rifled barrel. rifled/foster slugs and Brenneke slugs stabilize like a shuttlecock with weight forward designs(hollow base on the rifled/foster and wads screwed to the base for the brenneke). btw the rifling on a rifled slug is not there to spin the slug they are there so excess lead can be shed into them when its squeezed through a choke.
