Customized Mosin Nagant not holding zero

Getting 1'' groups at 100 yards with a mosin is much more than anyone would expect. My stock mosin gets 6-8'' at that distance. I would say don't modify it any further!

Not really that hard if you get one with rifling & use decent ammo but the norm is 3-4" for your run of the mill example. If you are getting 6-8" there is something wrong with the rifle or the shooter.

Like I said before, I'll get 1" for 2-3 shots, then it goes all over the place with no consistency.

If you can get 1' for three shots and it goes back to 1" after the rifle has cooled with roughly the same POI, you have a barrel pressure/bedding issue. The barrel may not be bored true. Think about it this way since you are a machinist: Imagine a tube that is not bored perfectly true & may have a tad bit of stress in it to begin with held solid on one end. Heat it more on one end than the other in spurts about 1-2min apart. What effect do you think the heating will have on the end not being held?

Silly me. I never let the barrel completely cool between shots. I was short on time that day and I didn't have time to wait. I did a little research about bedding rifle stocks but I'm not sure if it's possible to do that to an Archangel stock. It sounds like bedding a synthetic stock may have little effect because synthetic stocks are more flexible than wood. But I'm no expert on the matter. In theory it could work.

Rifle is fine, i guess the shooter could be better :) . Seriously, if you want 1'' consistently and even with a hot barrel, you need a heavy barrel on a precision made rifle, not a mosin. If you are getting 1'' on your first shots, I say you did very well with your mods and should keep that rifle!!

Update:
I went to the range today with my Mosin. It was a little windy but not bad. My results: Improved consistency.

After doing some research I decided to bed my stock. It was a little messy but the results look good and the fit was nice.

I also checked the fit between the stock and the barrel. I removed the barrel tensioner and I also free floated the barrel. I have just enough clearance so I can slide a sheet of paper between the barrel and stock. I had to remove some material from the stock with a dremel, but not much.

Even with a hot barrel today I was still getting better groupings than before. I even managed to hit a bulls eye today at 100 yards with a hot barrel.

My Mosin will never be a tack driver, but I'm happy with the results today.

In summation bedding the stock, removing the barrel tensioner and free floating the barrel got me better results. I'm now more confident in using that rifle. I'm still not 100% sold on the JMECK scope mount, but I might install a different mount down the road. The fun you have putting together a rifle. :D

Update again:
So I did a little experiment. I bought some MFS Soft Points today. They are 203 grain. The FMJ's I was using before are 174 grain. I shot 10 shots of each with my barrel only warm to the touch. My results blew my mind! After struggling with consistency issues I overlooked such a simple factor: ammunition. I went from hits varying up to 10 inches apart, to getting 2" groupings again and again at 100 yards. With a hot barrel my hits drifted to the right but only about an inch or two. I set up some pieces of wood that are only 1-2 inches wide, and I picked off each one in succession. I couldn't get over how much of an improvement I had. I must also say that I switched to a Rock Solid Industries scope mount, I removed my JMECK. I'm now extremely happy with my Mosin!

I can now call this thread closed. :D

Reduce the upward tension o your barrel either via the front lug or from the (I assume barrel tensioner on the archangel stock) my sniper was doing that for ikl I found the right balance of tension on my rear and forward recoil lugs.
