Cut, Crown, and Thread Price?

Hey All,

I've got a take-off savage barrel in .308 on the way, and I am planning on getting it cut down to 18.5, crowned and threaded...

Why, you may ask? well the barrel has a fairly slim contour (dunno what yet, just looking at pictures) and we all know that stiffness increases as the barrel gets shorter...

And increased stiffness should increase precision (at the cost of a few hundred fps)

...I'm thinking along the lines of 'Matt's Ghetto-Cheap precision build' :D

Also known as the 'My son was just born, now I have no monies..' build...

So getting to the heart of the matter, what's a reasonable price for a quick cut, crown, and thread?

And if anyone has suggestions on who could do this on the cheap in the Ottawa area, I'd be forever grateful!

Jason @ Gunco can certainly do the crown and chamber, and likely also the threading and his prices are very fair. You could also send a PM to Ian Robertson and see how busy he is right now.
 
Great opportunity to conduct an experiment.
Shoot the barrel with length as received, then have it cut and see if the accuracy is improved.
In the Ottawa area, Jason or Ian could certainly do a first class job.
I'm assuming that the threading is for a brake; it would be best if you have it on hand, so that it can be fitted to the barrel when the threads are cut.
 
Threading is for the potential future brake... figure I may as well get it done at the same time...

The experiment suggestion is duly noted, however I am not sure how often I want to be taking the barrel off and putting it back on...

I am a physicist, and a mechanical engineer - somebody challenges me to a mechanical experiment... and I turn it down?? unlikely ;)

If you want the best 'fit' I would much prefer the brake in hand before threading a barrel... Fairly fine threads with variations...
 
The shorter stiffer barrel theory has merit but LR shooters have figured how to tune very long barrels so today, it really isn't as important.

What you are testing is if there are any barrel defects beyond where you cut. Factory barrels are truly hit and miss for performance and some can be pretty wonky.

A lucky chop may remove a defect and voila, the barrel shoots better.

In general, there is precious little change in the performance in cutting as long as the ammo was tuned properly for each barrel length.

Some tests I have seen use 1 type of ammo and suddenly one length yields best results so that length now becomes the magical accuracy length. Of course, all that has happened is the barrel has been changed to be intune with that 1 ammo. Change the ammo, change the result.

Juan, I think I may take you up on that offer, gotta see if there are funds for shipping right now... (diapers are expensive!!)

Also, I need to somehow afford a new bolt head too... lol...

On the bright side, once this is done I will have a stainless barrel and 223 bolt head to sell... that should offset some of the cost, right? lol...

Jerry, I have a hunch you are right about the cutting off the barrel imperfections... and statistics say if I only have 18" of barrel instead of 22", I am less likely to have a flaw in the barrel, right?

Also, from the reading I've done, it sounds like a big source of the improvement is a proper crown as opposed to the factory crown.

Dunno, but I think I am gonna try... like I said, gonna have to check the budget first...

This is the kind of stuff that keeps me coming back to this forum. It’s great to see that there are still owner / operators that do these kinds of things. Just too bad I had the snip after our last kid was born: Any chance you might think about a retro deal. LOL
And congrats of the birth of your child it only gets better from here.

Tempting, and I will keep it in mind, right now I haven't even found time to make it to my current range (Smith's Falls) this year! And that was BEFORE the baby came! lol

Thankfully I am done school now, and just started a 9-5 job, so I may actually be able to make it to Connaught one of the times that it is open to the 'public'.

(That's the reason I am a member at Smith's Falls, my available shooting hours were limited by school, and a retail job... lol)
