cut factory 10/22 barrel

I have a spare stock barrel now and I was wondering if I could cut it back to 16.5" I know that you can buy them much shorter I was just wondering about the legalities of modifiyng the factory tube. I would cut it because the accuracy is terrible anyways and I would like to recrown it and get rid of the ugly front site. Thanks for your replies.

You can't legally. It is prohibited to alter a rifle's barrel to less than 18".

Buy a short factory barrel, or have one manufactured for you by a gunsmith, otherwise it's prohib.

that's crazy that I can buy a 12" Dlask but can't lob 1/2" off but I guess thats how she goes.

Just machine the front sight off and recrown. That way you keep the end of the bbl intact and can recrown to gain some accuracy. JMO.
