I’m looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow morning, I’ve been going hard since the season opened. Lots of early mornings and full days hunting, today was no exception. I got up and was heading out on the quad as dawn hit, got into an area that’s pretty much quad or side by side only accessible. I’ve been close twice to connecting with a couple of bucks that are hanging around, some nice two pt whitetails and a big plump spiker.

Drove in and parked and quietly walked in around a nice wooded area with lots of game trails and bedding areas, as I met up with an old overgrown skidder trail I saw a big doe and the spiker I’ve encountered before. 30-35yds in on the trail, they froze while checking me out. I got the spiker in my scope and took the shot, like the doe I got on the 10th I hit the heart and lungs. Have been using Federal power shock 180g sp’s this year and they have performed beautifully, this guy took one hop and went down fast.

I cut my tag and got him field dressed quick fast, I had a hell of a time getting him up onto the back rack of the quad. Couldn’t drag him up over no matter how I tried lol, I ended up trussing up his legs and squat lifting him up onto the rack. For a spike buck he was pretty big and heavy, got him home and my wife and I got him skinned and quartered and into a cooler. I weighed the blackstraps and tenderloins and they were 9lbs 3oz, tomorrow we’ll cut and wrap and grind up the rest.

Now I can relax and get looking for a mulie or bear, I really want to cut my black bear tag this fall. If that happens I’ll be so pleased, hopefully my wife drops another whitetail before October is done. Im going to have to plug in the second chest freezer I think haha, we have 25 meatbirds to process on the 31st so there will be no shortage of meat around here this winter. I hope everyone else is having a successful season as well.

That gun couldnt have killed that spike, cause it isnt a magnum ;)
Congrats and job well done, looks tender and tasty !
Maybe some sauce chasseurs aux girolles with some cabernet sauvignon mixed in the sauce for added flavor or save for the dinner toast?

Yes, I agree. The in laws dropped off a bag of pine mushrooms for us yesterday, so some sort of sautéed pine mushroom and onion concoction will be in order. Likely a bit of gravy or sauce as well, I don’t expect any leftovers haha.

I save the magnum loads for the grouse, I found a these boxes of CIL #4,5 & 6 at a community garage sale last year and when I need to reach out and touch a bird they do the trick!

He made the "buckitt list" .......... huh?

;)

I won’t lie Looky, I was keeping my eyes peeled for his buddy with two points. I had an encounter with the spiker three days prior, he was hanging with a doe and a 2 pt buck in the hillside area of the woods I shot him in. They were up the hill quick fast and into some thick stuff and I couldn’t get a clear shot, I had a good look at them briefly before they disappeared. Meat is meat though and if it’s a good size deer I’m not picky on the size of the antlers, I’m more concerned with how many wrapped packs of meat I’ll be putting in the freezer. I had no hesitation on taking another big spiker like last year, last years was taaasty!
