Cut my buck tag this morning.

Yes, I agree. The in laws dropped off a bag of pine mushrooms for us yesterday, so some sort of sautéed pine mushroom and onion concoction will be in order. Likely a bit of gravy or sauce as well, I don’t expect any leftovers haha.

I save the magnum loads for the grouse, I found a these boxes of CIL #4,5 & 6 at a community garage sale last year and when I need to reach out and touch a bird they do the trick!

Your an evil man !!
those shells where the best ever !!
The Best I tellz yah.
Can feel the recoil and the smell of spent Imperial shot shells.
Sounds like a great evening ahead .
Bon Apatite'

Thanks Thomas, only one way to make it happen right! Hope your having a successful season this year as well.

it has been a good season so far , can't complain.
I think the highlight so far was meeting up with member MD in a spot we have mutually camped at and hunted around for many years but never met except on cgn threads/pm's. Me and my partner struck out over the 3 days but we both filled tags the week before. Nothing worthy (fully mature) came thru my favorite spot but I drew MD a map on a napkin to an good ambush site about a km away from my treestand and his shot was the only one we heard in the valley those 3 days of hunting.
The rest of my season will be mostly solo hunts , leaving tomorrow for mcleese lake -ish to see about a big black bear while I harvest rose hips for jelly and take pictures of moose and deer i can't shoot :)

congrats . butcherbill .a nice meat buck for sure .when i saw that picture of those shotgun shells you have . brings back memories of my friend shooting crows with those.ha .

Good to hear and good luck with the rest of the season, I had fun the two visits I had with my buddies but I enjoy the solo hunts a lot. A bit more to consider once the animal is on the ground but worth it to be in the woods alone. The fall has always been my favourite season of the year, even more so since I’ve started hunting.

Highlight for me too, to meet you and your partner, then realizing coincidentally that I've known his father and brother for 30 years!

I'm going to frame that blue shop napkin.

Well done ButcherBill!!

I've got a couple of really nice pictures of a 6 pointer that seems to like the snacks I've been leaving in the yard. Now I just have to train him to show up at legal light so I can get him! Any tips?

Oh man, I had a big brute of a wt buck showing at 2-4am on my trail cam last year in late oct till the season closed. Nothing I did could get that crafty buck to show during legal light, I finally got him to stop long enough to eat some prime alfalfa and windfall apple I was putting out. He would show up and look right at the camera and take a piss to mark his territory haha, crafty bugger.

I managed to get last years spiker to show in the day by topping up the apple pile in the early mornings, he seemed to figure out there was more to hog out on during the day when less competition was around. Once I had him showing in the day multiple times I had a feeling I had a solid chance if I was there early enough, I was right. ;)

This big lad was a ghost, the longest he stayed for was only a few minutes. I haven’t caught him on camera this year, hope he’s still out there lol.

My wife and I cut and wrapped everything today, we cut steaks, roasts and cubes out of the rear quarters. We use a lot of ground venison throughout the year so all the good trim, neck and rib meat as well as the front quarters got ground up to the tune of 25lbs. Set aside some steaks for the bbq for the nights dinner and a big rump roast for tomorrow night and invited some friends and family for dinner.

The steaks got a bit of salt and pepper, a splash of Worcestershire and olive oil and on the grill they went. After they were cooked I sliced the steaks thinly and made my own version of a steak and cheese slider. Bit of mayo, bbq sauce, cheese and homemade bread and butter pickles from the garden. They were so tender they melted in the mouth. If I never eat a cut of beef again, I don’t think I’ll miss it if there’s venison on hand.

That gun couldnt have killed that spike, cause it isnt a magnum ;)
Congrats and job well done, looks tender and tasty !
Maybe some sauce chasseurs aux girolles with some cabernet sauvignon mixed in the sauce for added flavor or save for the dinner toast?
Rob

a fine connaisseur. a bourgogne will do the trick too ...

I agree, I would gladly never eat beef again if only I could get my freezer filled with venison, bear, and other game. Instead, I'll have to enjoy the odd grouse I get for the time being...

I’ve been trying to find a bear Suther and with the exception of the one on my in laws property I had to pass up I’m not having much luck, there’s a ton of signs but I haven’t been in the right place at the right time this fall.

Yeah grouse are tasty, I’m always sad when the seasons on them closes. Grouse hunting is my favourite, lots of action and quick to clean and nice portions on a bird usually.
