Cut shell vs Wax

"Okay" I'll bite what are you asking about?? I've been around a few years and I have never heard of this "cut shell, wax shell" senerio.

Many years ago when paper shell casings where the norm we used to put a dob of wax over the crimp to help give the shell some water resistance!! But I don't think this is what your on about.

Your going to have to explain your inquiry to us uneducated folks.

But short version: cut shell...aka "ringed shell" aka "poacher's slug". : the casing is partially cut above the brass, allowing the in-tact casing/shot/wad to leave the barrel as a single projectile.

Wax: birdshot is removed from shell, mixed with liquified wax and poured back in where it cools into a solid block. Shotload leaves the barrel as a single projectile.

It was common rembolt in the 60's & 70's here but looking back real stupid. The cuts were normally used to shoot over a flock of geese that dropped in the field outside your decoys to get them to lift off rather than taking the time to walk down and raise the birds. We never cut them right at the brass however more like 1/2 way to make sure the hull got out.I still see it being done in PEI for the same reason.
I have never seen anyone using the wax filler however.
 
As mentioned it's an unethical way to take a shot at a happenchance deer or bear without having the necessary licence. Even poachers risk carrying the slugs or SSG'S rather than use hillbilly(urban) legends..
 
Cutting the shell to create a make shift slug I had seen done by our native guide once to shoot a seal. Appeared to work on that occasion anyways as the seal ended up deceased and the guides gun barrel did not look any worse for wear. The wax in the shot trick I never previously heard of. Sounds like buffering to the very extreme.

The question is "Ontario The Free", why are you asking this question in the first place ?? especially with availability of state of the art slugs on the market to-day. My guess is your just disturbing the manure pile to see what comes up, as no one in there right mind would try these two methods in this day and age.!!
 
Cut sells work great i have shot thousands ,, there power is amazing for a cheap low brass target load ..

Cut shells and Wax slugs are significantly cheaper than slug loads which tend to go for around a buck a piece.

The last time I bought the 15rd value packs of Winchester 1oz 2 3/4" slugs at Canadian Tire they were $14.99+tax. With a little effort, fun plinking loads can be made for significantly cheaper than store bought slugs.

I have a Norinco HP9 that i have shot thousands of cut shells and wax slugs through .. The gun and the barrel is fine , just as good as the day i bought it .
 
I would be very histant to run a cut shell ... you are now forcing the entire top half of the shell down the barrel - which it was not designed to accomodate. I've seen lots of peopel do it, and they all still ahve their shotguns, but it's not something I woudl do in my shotgun.

Wax does work well for making a "safety slug". Gives great initial penetration, and in any soft target, the internal damage is fairly significant. Unlike a slug, if you hit something solid that wasn't your target, you don't have a 1 Oz chunk of lead going off in an unknown direction.

I actually just prepped 3 boxes of target load to make a batch of wax slugs for tomorrow.
They are a lot of fun for cheap plinking but serve no purpose beyond that. I could maybe see a use for them in a SHTF/Zombie scenario (If you believe in that sort of thing) as lots of people have boxes of target load lying around but not necessarily boxes of slugs or 00 buck. In my experience, they are safe and leave NO residue in the barrel unlike what a lot of people are assuming about them

Ja, or maybe a 3-1/2" mag in a damascus barreld gun chambered for 2" shells....

There is no limit to the potential dumb things someone could do.

Just like another potentially dangerous hobby.... Reloading!
I mean... can you imagine that some people put bullets of varing weights on multiple powders in cases of different calibers!!!
Some poor damn fool is going to load his .308 with a 300 grain .45 cal slug and power it with Bullseye, and he'll be "out of luck!"
