Cut shotgun shells

Yeah, tried them a few times, surprisingly accurate at close range. I've got a stash of slug so in the future would only consider them in a survival situation, never could get over the notion that they must have a failure rate, then birdshot is going downrange instead of a "slug".

Can anyone confirm if it is safe to do in a fixed full choke gun?

Online says its fine but I would really like to hear from some one who has actually done it.

Works ok. A bunch of lead shot is not nearly as brutal as steel shot.

Takes a bit of practice to make cut slugs that work.

Wax slugs are more effective and reliable.

I need to try this. Should be fun to try. Just knowing how much of the case to leave intact? Is that the hard part? ( I found cutting the hulls on the shotgun shells completely in half that I was inspecting for powder, it was very easy to not spill anything. )

Make two cuts, one on each side of the case. Make each one a little longer than half way around.

Make them about a tenth of an inch different heights, so they overlap each other.

The cuts should be in the middle of the plastic wad legs, not lower where the powder would leak out.

I remember doing this when I was....a long time ago....a couple of slices and some fun to be had back in the day....go and buy the cheapest 12g bird from CT and off to the pit.
We would blast away wearing blue jeans, a t-shirt and no glasses....what fools we were. O P, thank you for bringing up a truly fond memory

Sounds good , thanks for the tip!!

Bassmaster, your very welcome. Looks like you have something to do this spring.

I did it many years ago, as a kid who tried all such things. Heard stories of older brothers doing it, so had to sneak out and try it.
I basically did it about like Ganderite has stated. I really couldn't see any advantage in them, for any purpose.
I remember I was using CIL Imperial heavy loads!

been doing it for 35 year's

done correctly-you have created a 1 1/8 oz slug out of a target shell...Poor Mans Brenneke...I don't fire out of anything tighter than modified any more- JIC -but I have experimented (lead shot) on full choke on my 870 and they work fine...

Might be good out of a slug gun, but seems kinda useless otherwise.

I would think a rifled barrel would spin the whole thing and that would send pellets flying away from the main projectile once it reached the end of the barrel...

These don't really have a point. MAYBE in a survival situation, they could be used for big game hunting or something like that, but really they're more a novelty than anything else. But then again, one could argue that gun ownership in Canada (especially if you don't hunt) is largely a novelty too, so...

Something stupid we did back in the day when we didnot know any better
One thing we didnot have back then either was screw in choke tubes for these to catch on and as it was especially when paper hulls were used they screwed their fair share of barrels. Chokes are not designed to handle the extra diameter of the hull passing by with the rest of the load think of it with some common sense
Sure they may work fine for 100 but 101 may take your fingers off
They make something safe for this it is called a SLUG stop being cheap and buy them
Cheers

I have slugs thanks.
My shotgun has an open choke in it. Gonna see how much room is left for the wad and hull at the muzzle.
It was an interesting idea for if you needed a slug when out back in the bush, and did not have any. I wonder how far you could shoot relatively accurate?

I'll bet the Wax slugs work better at a distance. buddy on youtube said they are like a 70 cal Glaser safety slug . I agree. If I remember right he shot the wax slugs through what looked like metal shelf . and the cut shells trough a paper target.

Done it in my H&R single shot. Was actually more accurate then a slug at 50 yards. It was a poachers trick years ago to knock down deer
