How short can i trim my barrel and stay un resctricted?

What is minimum total overal lenght i need to stay un res?

Trying to build a Whippit bonnie and clyde style shotgun.

i did the same but kept it at 20 inches i think so i wouldent mess up the vented rib but as long as you r over 18.5 inches you will be ok

S.84 of the Criminal Code:

My understanding is that basically, if a barrel is "altered" (sawing, cutting, etc.), it has to be greater than or equal to 457 mm and the overall weapon length has to be 660mm or greater.

Go under and it doesn't become restricted, it becomes prohibited. And your day is ruined.

Just my $0.02

That's what the Code says - but I'm not a CFO. I'd suggest calling one of them to discuss what you want to do and the legalities of it if you have concerns.

But for reference:

"prohibited firearm"

(b) a firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting, or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
(i) is less than 660 mm in length, or
(ii) is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

also keep in mind that with a semi-auto, barrel length can affect function. on some semis you need to enlarge the port size when cutting down the barrel.
if its an old smoothbore 870 barrel, id say get out your pipe cutter and cut away... but a vent ribbed 1100 barrel i would leave to a gunsmith - especially if you are unclear as to min. barrel lengths.

I know there is recoil spring in the back, but it does not go beyond the handle. I know how short I can cut the butt stock.

Question is how short can i cut it. If I go down to 20 inch, or 18.5 will I have gas port issues?

1100

You will have function probs if you cut a 1100 barrel down.

On this design the gas ports bleed off gas to cycle the action and the amount is critical.

A gunsmith competent in these mods can mod the barrel in addition to cutting it but you need someone who knows what they're doing.

A centrefire semi auto barrel needs to be 18.5in minimum to remain legal.
All long guns need to be 26in overall in their shortest configuration ( ie folders/telescopers etc) to remain legal as well.

so if i can cut it down to 18.5 in that be legal. and maintain overall 26 inch.

What do I need to know about the gas ports to make sure it cycles?

Not sure of your plans but I think what can14 was just trying to say is what I believe as well.
And that is.. pistol grip only style shotguns kinda suck at actually hitting anything past a few yards , I feel you might regret it later.
I made a single shot 12 guage with a 18.5 in barrel for the ATV but I am glad I kept the butt stock on.

edited ....IMHO:)

I'll piggy back on here, he wants to cut the barrel, he can and still remain legal if he measures 'thrice' and cuts once.
But will he ruin the gas mechanism that creates the reload, or is it he might?
I assume how small its cut will matter.
Is there a way to have it recalibrated as long as he does no damage to the internals?

Trekstor unless someone can give you a crystal clear answer I'd at least call up a smith, or try and contact remington before you wreck your gun.

I'll jump in here, as the (less than) proud owner of a bubba'd 1100. The barrel was cut down to 20" and because of this it does not feed reliably. I haven't shot it since I picked it up (on the cheap :D) but the previous owner disclosed to me that it doesn't cycle trap loads well but heavy buck/slugs it will (I suppose more powder?)...

So, I would recommend NOT cutting it yourself (although yes keep it over 18.5" for the barrel and 26" overall then your legal) but if you really want a tacticool 1100 take the barrel to a smith an have them do it. It is possible to enlarge the ports on the barrel (Inside the barrel band/lug/ whatever you call it, and then it will cycle. But you probably can't do that yourself (I know I couldn't) so its best to leave it to the pros.

Also to the guys who jump into threads like this and say "oh don't make it a pistol grip you can't hit anything!"
First off, your wrong or your incompetent. If you can't hit something (were not shootin' skeet with it here) at say 10, 15 20yards with a pistol grip, your doing something wrong. Is it less steady? yes, but its not particularly difficult to manage either.
Secondly, the OP said he is doing a project here. He stated that HE WANTS a pistol grip. He didn't ask what YOU WANTED, nor did he ask if it was a good idea. He said thats what he was planning on doing. His only questions here were about barrel length and cycling function, so get off your high horse, and don't go mouthing off about how he regret doing something HE WANTS to his own gun. Jeez, rant off

Wow , you gotta lighten up a bit ...I was only putting forth my experiances and I was not on any kinda horse to do it.
Maybe you should get off yours ??
As always opinions are like arse holes around here...everyone has one.
I just think I was a little more polite than you were in putting forth my OPINION...
I guess I will have to have put IMHO in great big letters to save myself another tune up.

reply to rant over ...:)

I believe the bolt return spring in the stock is longer than just the pistol grip.

Bingo!

I also to be curious to know if someone on this board had a factory short barrel 1100/1187 could measure the diameter of the gas port(s) in the barrel... I have seen 1100 barrels with both 1 and 2 gas ports in the barrel, I believe one was 2 3/4 gun and the other was a 3", I just can't recall which was which...

My goal, but with a Rem 1100, looks more slick, got it for better price,

as you can see the but stock is shorter, so I call it a pistol grip...

Bonie and Clyde had a huge arsenal. They used this shotgun cuz it actually was good at it was suppose to be. Since I saw it, I said to my self 2 years ago, I will build something like it to add to my collection.
