Is there enough meat on the receiver for a gunsmith to cut a 3/8 dovetail on the receiver or is it better to purchase the dovetail scope base stock and bed it to the action?
for the price of that work buy a new savage put a good scope on it and be happy ,, model 39s are made for iron sights and in my opinion should be left that way ,,
You could get a length of 3/8 undrilled dovetail from Brownells contour it a bit and use 5 min epoxy to attach it,easy and cheap as long as you don't want to take it off
I haven't seen one get dovetails cut, but that certainly doesn't mean you can't. I have seen a few D&T with a base added. The base usually has had a notch removed over loading area so "full sized" fingers can load it easily.
