Morning,

I'm thinking of taking my 22" norc m14 and having the barrel chopped to 18.6". Has anyone done this before? Any loss in accuracy? If this is done and I toss on an aftermarket flash hider, do I still need the castle nut or can I just use a crush washer.

Cheers

I had mine cut down and then threaded at 1/2 x28 TPI ....You wont be able to use the castle nut or original flashider any longer and a crush washer will be used instead.

With a scoped, rifle I wouldn't expect any loss in accuracy. The barrel will be a tad stiffer, and you should see less barrel whip, all else being equal.....

You will see a drop in velocity.

The shorter sight radius will make for less "precise" aiming with irons.

For myself, when I cut down barrels, as the lathe won't allow a barrelled action into the through stock, removal of the barrel from the action is neccisary. I usually true up the barrel so it is properly timed, make alignment/indexing marks, remove the barrel from the receiver, cut/crown/thread, reinstall the barrel and then re-assemble the rifle. As the op-rod guide is removed, usually that gets touched as well at the assembly stage.

Cheers!
