Just curious if any non-12(6)ers out there have ever cut down an S&W 686 6 inch barrel to 4.25" and if so please post pics of the finished product. I would eventually like to get a 686 but I find the 4" feels better to me then the 6". Since I missed the boat on the 12(6) this seemed like a reasonable option.

Talk to Gunnar at Armco (sponsor above)... he's done a number of these shortenings.

Reasonable prices and he does EXCELLENT work. Highly recommended around here....

4.25" is 107.95mm
you can actually go down to 105+mm or 4.14" and be legal in Canada.
But 4.25" is an interesting number, because one of the gun "games" in the USA, it might be IDPA (I'm not sure) requires 4.25" or longer barrels.
Therefore there are a lot of revolvers manufactured with 4.25" barrels.

Or 108mm according to the CFC... Ain't it funny how they can round that up... :rolleyes:
Ya, but irrelevent. The only important length is 105mm. If it's longer than 105mm it's not prohibited.

I chose 4.25" to ensure that regardless of who measured or cut it it would not be mistakenly made prohib. I've heard that not all verifiers and smiths can measure accurately and that if you cut down to 4.14" there could be an issue due to human errors doing the work and verifiying it afterwords.

Measuring is not a big problem. It can always be measured again to correct for a bad measurement. The problem is if you cut a little too much you can't put it back.

Samples of Gunnar's work from his site. If I had the cash I would be ordering up one (or more....) of these babies;

Actually, in IDPA, the maximum barrel length in Stock Service Revolver Division and Enhanced Service Revolver Division is 4.2". You may want to take that into consideration prior to having any work done.
