Cutting a M305 flashhider in half?

To reduce the length of a M305, I'm thinking about cutting 2" off the flash hider. I want to keep the factory barrel and iron sights so I'm not sending it to get chopped anytime soon. Does anyone here have experience or knowledge how this chopping would affect the rifle?

If you cut it off flush at the muzzle your fine "just take it off the gun first lol"

You will just have more flash "same as any 308 hunting rifle"

Well, I don't plan to cut it flush because I want to leave some of the prongs on to protect the crown. As long as it's flash, I don't mind.
 
If you just leave the bare prongs you won't need to buy a bayonet:D, although they do tend to bend easily which could be very bad if you shoot and haven't noticed.

1,000,000,000 of rifles dont have flash hiders and there crowns are fine ;)

I dont think leaving sharp prongs on the end of your muzzle is a good idea

Go for it! I cut the flash hider off my M14S. I removed the hider, cut it flush back so all the veins are gone. Then on to a lathe to smooth out. A quick blueing and back on the rifle, that is now 2.75" shorter. :D

hey chalkriver, that actually looks good to me! (some may disagree). probably took a few decibels off the noise too.
 
I wouldn't worry about the prongs bending too much. Just don't leave them really long so they bend easily. If you are worried about wrecking your flash hider you can always pick up one from the EE to try it on.
 
Cutting of the filled in Flashhider probably doesn't make much of a difference but on the M14 forums I read a test where they cut off the functional one to the detriment of both controllability and accuracy.

Detriment to controllability? :confused: Are they talking about full auto M14? No loss of accuracy or controllability after I chopped my functional flash hider.
 
and there shouldn't be unless the bullet is contacting the f/h somehow. Think about it for a minute; the bullet has left the barrel, is going through a "tunnel " in which it never touches the sides and is open to the air on 3 sides- short of contacting the outer rim there should be no difference
