I sold and shipped a rifle to a CGN member.
It didn't make the trip very well.
I blame cheap temp. Xmas season Canada post workers.
He is returning for a deserved refund, but now I have an opportunity to experiment.
I've been in touch with Casey at TAC-ORD and he will cut and crown the damaged portion that was sticking out of the box.
I figure on losing 100 foot per second per inch of barrel shortening.
Am I really going to lose functionality if I give the go ahead to chop to 18" from 22" ?
It's a Ruger stainless 77 Mark II.

Depending on ammo loads and your barrel you will only lose between 25 fps and 50 fps per inch, there was a test done by people in the States who cut down an inch at a time from 26 in to 16 in and then chronographed average was 36fps on three different rifles and calibers

All of my testing on barrel chops would suggest that your velocity loss with a .270, would equate to approximately 50 fps/inch from 26" - 16"... in general the larger the bore and the heavier (slower) the round, the less velocity you loose on a barrel bob when expressed as a percentage of the original velocity.

If on closer inspection a recrown is necessary, I would not personally cut a .270 shorter than 20", unless it needs to fit into a specific space requiring reduced length.

I sure wouldn't want a really short barreled .270 Winchester. A re crown can be as little as a few thousands of an inch... I sure can't blame CP workers temporary or not for an exposed barrel. Definitely a packing problem in my mind.

Forced to agree with this. Soft padding (Styrofoam, bubble wrap, etc) around the muzzle, combined with a thin piece of wood or several thick layers of cardboard for that end to bear against, will prevent this occurrence.

Bob the barrel to 19 or 20 inches and it will handle fairly nice while strolling through the woods

I am thinking 18" for an ATV and truck gun, unfortunatley it will be lots of noise and a big muzzle flash, but I am thinking it would be a very cool 150 yard gun and I can use it in the caliber restricted WMU's in southern Ontaio, for coyotes coming close to the horse paddocks

I'll go 50/50 on this, made it from the east coast to toronto, then I applied a new adress label and shipped another 300 klm, thats when the damage happened

My 20.5" .270 has quite a bark. Not polite. My 20.5" .308 is fine. Something to consider. I really like short easy to carry rifles but personally would not choose .270 as the chambering for one.

I have one 30-06 with a 20 inch barrel. It also barks a bit more than my other hunting rifles. Not really an issue while hunting, but from the range bench it often draws comments from other nearby shooters.

I really should wear double hearing protection while sighting it in.

Never lost one and never had a rifle damaged.
What did Canada Post say about insurance?

I don't get insurance.
Sent a few hundred packages with no issues.
It was bound to happen sooner or later.
Also, buyers hate paying 30 for shipping, how much does that wooden coffin cost to ship?

Velocity loss is real, but is the least important of the things to consider. I had a friend with a .270 with a 20" barrel. It was a vicious, nasty little beast to be anywhere near when he touched one off. If you are ever going to shoot a short barrel .270, even once without hearing protection you will be sorry. Shortened barrels and "handy" but adversely affect balance for good field accuracy from field positions, are much louder, and affect velocity. Of course others disagree, but I want nothing to do with them.
