Cutting down a Dewey rod?

The issue is probably going to be getting the front ferrule off the fibreglass rod. Have you contacted Dewey? They might have a sectional rod that meets your needs. (You're probably not the first person to ask.)
 
He sells replacement handles, so I would think the handle should come off someway, the back end of the rod cut and then the handle reinserted

I was hoping someone had tried removing a Dewey handle before and would share any gained knowledge! I hate being first to try something as I usually frick it up. :) I could just brute force the handle off...
 
It is easy to take the handle off but the bearing race is built into the rod body. So the short answer is no. Now if you want to re-engineer the whole thing .. Dennis has it simple!! Or buy a shorter Rod.

Thanks Randy B, was hoping to be cheap using an existing rod. Appreciate for the info.

Thanks, took me a bit to find the handle! I saved the link to a shorter rod too that should work
 
If you actually remove the handle be aware that the bearing balls are not captured inside and will spill all over the place both top and bottom bearings.. Don't ask how I know this..��
 
I have shortened Parker Hale rods at the other end and altered to use American brushes... Dewey should be able to be done at that end too...
 
I understand that this does not answer the OP's question but my suggestion would be throw a pull-through cable (like the Otis system, for instance...) in the case for occasional cleaning while at the range. At least, that's what I would do...

I have. :) Took the handle off, making sure to save all the ball bearings, easy to lose. Cut the rod and then rethreaded it. Size escapes me right now, but a standard size. Where I had to trim the rubber coating back for threading, I installed a piece of electrical heat shrink insulation. Handle back on, not too tight, Presto. Rod is hard, so a little tough to thread, but can be done.

I would still have an extra 10" to put some where, the pic does not show the full length of the rod :(

My skills might not allow for damages on the bore end of the rod :(

I may try this or go the easy route and just buy one for the correct length

Meh, I just wait till I get home to do my cleaning but pack a brass rod just in case I need to knock out a squib or I'll carry a sectional cleaning rod.
