I just purchased a Rem 870 super-mag 12 ga that came with a 30" ribbed barrel. As most of my hunting will be upland bird, deer (slugs) and Turkey I am thinking of cutting it down to about 20" and getting it threaded for rem-chokes.

Has anyone done this ? Any pitfalls? Can anyone recommend a gunsmith that does this type of work?

Did that to my old Wingmaster a few years ago. Cut down the 30" full barrel to 26" and had it threaded for the Winchoke system. I know it sounds odd, but I prefer the Winchokes with the knurled end: no tools required!!!

That work was done in Quebec city 10 years ago, I would recommend the gunsmith has he did good work for a reasonnable price, but he closed down since.

If I would do it again, I might be tempted to go a little bit shorter like 23-24".

I'm sure you will not regret it, 30" is too long, except on a trap gun.

I have a Winchester with the barrel cut at 20", no choke at all. Used strictly for grouse and as a camp/home defense gun. Just added the ATI M4 style stock/grip and forearm to it.
