Gentlemen,

I've just purchased a handgun that has an extended barrel. The barrel extends about .5 inches (12/13 mm) from the slide, is approximately 4.5 inches long and is made of stainless steel.

I would like to cut down the barrel to 106 -110mm. What is the standard operating procedure for this?

Is this something that only a gunsmith can do or can I just have at 'er with a hacksaw and a couple of hours?

Thanks

The crown of the barrel, that being the very end of the muzzle, has profound effects on accuracy. I'm not a gunsmith, but the squareness of the cut and the concentricity of the muzzle crown is critical of accuracy. This work is best done with specialized tools, although its not impossible to do with hand tools. Best done with a lathe if its the kind of barrel I am picturing.

The amount of material you want to take off isn't quite enough to use a hacksaw. If you did use a hacksaw, you would still need to finish it on a lathe. I would just use a lathe to start with or hand it off to someone with a lathe.

If it has an extended barrel , that may be to make it legal. Before shortening this barrel put a rod or unsharpened pencil down the barrel of the unloaded gun to the breech face, then mark where the end of the barrel comes to on the rod or pencil, now take it out and measure from where it touched the breech face to the mark for the end of the barrel. How long is your barrel, now?
