I have a 20 inch barrel on my AR and im working getting a 16 inch.

My question is, can i simply cut my current gas tube down to fit a 16 inch barrel or do i need to buy a new one for it?

thanks

What exactly do you mean by "finished"?

See how it's finished on the muzzle end? It's also flared on the other end. Do you think you can make work by cutting it down. Not to mention the bend on the chamber side without kinking it.

Quit posting and do some reading.

What kind of increased pressures are you going to be creating with the shortened gas tube? I think there is a lot of engineering that needs to be thought through if you wish to do things safely. my $0.02

Do you happen to have a flaring tool handy? I have one in my garage and if I thought the flare looked similar I would just do it.

I bet you would build up a carbon "gasket" in no time anyway.

I have never cut one down myself but I have seen guys on M4C who know more than I ever expect to about the platform who have done it one a bunch of guns and they don't seem to think it's a big deal.

Bad idea, what gas system does your new barrel use? Midlength or carbine? Make sure you get the proper gas tube with the new barrel.

Not worth the future hassles to save $25 bucks.

Im going to get a 16" barrel, so im guessing I would need a Mid length gas tube?

Your 16" barrel will likely be a carbine gas system - midlength's are more uncommon.

See Ryan at Wolverine for Armalite parts, or Walter at Arms East for Stag parts - both are site sponsors.

Dissipators are most commonly midlength gas systems, btw, with a false front sight base.

I bought a couple from Brownells, I think High Standard made them. About $15 each. I bought a few extra pins seperately.

With this many questions about tube lengths/fitting/etc. , you might be well served by doing one of two things:

#1. Buy an upper that is already assembled. Barrel, receiver, gas tube, FSB...that way there are no parts mismatches. If you're assembling parts that you bought from various people and the whole she-bang doesn't...well...go "bang", then who do you ask to "make it right"?

#2. Find a smith/gun shop local to you that knows about AR's and get them to guide you and perhaps assemble your parts.
