I've seen guys get excellent results by scoring/marking the barrel with a tube cutter, and cutting with a hacksaw just past the score mark. Then, carefully file down to the score mark. It was recrowned using a small fine round stone (the ones that look like a soup bowl) on a drill press. I saw a few 303's done that way, and have a 6.5X55 that was done like that. They all shot fine. Plenty good enough for a hunting rifle. Yes, you are taking a chance, and you could ruin a $129 gun. Have you checked with a company like Tradex for a M44 action/barrel? They were dirt cheap at one time.
