I have a 20 inch stevens 77 with full wood stock, i'd ideally like to cut the barrel further than 18.5 due to a hole drilled in the barrel.

I see a lot of non restricted shotguns with short barrels being sold, what are the rules as far as cutting my own gun down?

Also, can I get away with just using a hacksaw/mitre box and deburring it with a dremel?

Anything below 18.5 on a semi, or 18 on a non-semi IIRC is going to make your gun a prohib If you are cutting it yourself. If from the factory as long as 26 inch OAL is maintained you are good to go.

Barrels can be cut to 18" (actually 457mm in the criminal code) before they become a prohibited device. The 18.5" limit is to keep a semi-auto centerfire non restricted. The short barrels have to be manufactured at the short length to be legal.
