Cutting flash hider into a barrel

Saw a post somewhere, I believe related to the ACR thread, where someone had a three-prong style flash hider cut into their 18.5" barrel to save the weight and length of adding a thread-on flash hider.

a) does this affect overall length from a legal perspective?
b) which gunsmiths could/would perform this service?

I would like to put my xcr-l on a diet, this just might be the trick.

Ian at Herron Arms is who is doing it on the ACR's, because it is machined into the continuous piece of metal that is the barrel, it is counted towards the barrel length. Overall length laws apply as normal. 26" minimum OAL.

I won't do a pronged suppressor this way.

The prongs need to be heat treated properly or they will be spreading out and breaking off.

If you want to go this way do a birdcage style.
