Cutting foam for a Pelican case to fit a couple of revolvers.

I tried cutting foam for an old Pelican case. It turned out OK, but I was wondering if anybody else has better success?
I started with laying out the revolvers while trying to balance the space along the edges. I just used a black sharpie marker to trace the outlines. Then a razor to cut off and peel out each layer, fitting it as Best as I could. I ordered this type of foam in a 2 foot by 4 foot sheet. With shipping it was a little over $25. I couldn't see paying over $40 + shipping to get a Pelican foam set.

I had to go back to cut out the ends of the trigger locks because it was riding a little high in the foam.
The fit is ok, but I think I might try making one of those hot wire cutters to get cleaner cuts.

Next foam job, pickup a hotwire cutter. Make some cardboard templates to guide the wire and use a light spray of adhesive on the cardboard along with some pins to keep it from shifting around while you cut.

Hotwire cutters can be bought off ebay, Aliexpress etc. There are instructions on making your own from an old hairdrier which can work out to be more economical since you can buy a cheap hairdrier for about $30? My buddy bought a small tabletop model from Michaels. I'd recommend a tabletop version than a handheld cutter if you want square cuts.

It depends on how much, and what quality of, foam cutting you plan to do but I recommend Hot Wire Foam Factory products. They make fantastic tools and they make a tool to do pretty much anything you can imagine with foam. most local hobby shops should carry their products but you can probably find better prices with a quick Google search one you find what you like.

Yes, I'm definitely going with a hot wire cutter next time. Thank you for the suggestions. I got it at elitetools.ca There are two different thicknesses available.

I didn't start out with a plan for the case, but after looking everywhere for pistol rugs that would fit and not being very successful in that search, i decided that the best way I could take them out would be in a case.

I bought my foam from Foam King in Edmonton. You give them the dimensions of your case, select the density of foam you want, and 2 weeks later, you have your foam. I made cardboard cutouts, then traced onto the foam, then used an electric carving knife to cut the foam. It's not bad, but I think I will order more foam and buy a hot wire cutter.

If you're driving through there's a place in scarborough (670 Progress Av, Scarborough, ON M1H 3A4) called cases unlimited, I had a guy cut me a foam blank for a pelican 1500 it fit perfectly
