Cutting the barrel on a SKS?

will be cutting my other sks to 18.5 also if accuracy is fine, not ;;;;;;16.5'';;;;;;, will try to figure out how to post pics. did a paratrooper front sight mod and have a fixed 5 rounder on the way, cut off bayo accesories also,

I would be really interested in close ups of the muzzle. I am really floored you can cut the chrome with minimal or no flaking? How did you do it? What type of blade, oil, speed. Please tell..

cool project if you have the time and $$. Don't worry about the naysayers. If it works well, and looks nice.. you done good!

:)

greg11, you are right, chopping to short is illegal but swapping in a barrel manufactured at that short length is legal. Clobbersaurus did this with his 858, Dlask swapped in a 12" barrel for him. But if youre gonna pay the big bucks for a shorty SKS, go all the way man. Weld the front sight base onto the gas block Krink style and have the barrel threaded 1/2"x28tpi or M14x1r right infront of the gas block. Then tune it to cycle reliably and hang a 40 rd. steel duckbill mag off it :D Sierra6point5, accuracy would probably be determined more by how well he crowned the barrel, the shorter length and less weight on it would mean a stiffer barrel that wouldnt whip as much, it could potentially tighten the groups up. I am very interested to see how this turns out

I'm assuming you've fired this gun before cutting the barrel? The thing I'm most interested in is a before and after range report, if this doesn't hurt accuracy and doesn't hurt the chrome then I'll be pretty interested in doing it as well

here goes
first time trying to post pics. did not shoot this rifle first
, would of liked to, not a scientific mod but a rifle to hunt deer in heavy timber on a nasty day, looking for minimum moa of deer at under 40 yds, build not done yet, did ejection port mod. bolt mod for tapco mags[remove mags with bolt closed] cut off bits of steel here and there, painted stock with truck undercoating

no,,,, pipecutter to score a line around barrel to keep hacksaw true and square, then filed and crowned according to a youtube gunsmith video i found[will look for it]. don't have the money right know for face cutter and crowner. tried this looks well done to the eye[better then original] but the range will be the test. Haven't drilled and pinned the sight to finish it yet incase i wan't to take it off for a proper facing and crowning, this is on a budget don't have the funds to buy what i wan't and am having fun with it so we'll see.
