Cutting the stock

Hello,

I am looking to buy my first shotgun for upland Hunting. Since I’m short (5,5), I will need to cut the stock on the shotgun to reduce the LOP (need 13 inches)

I was wondering if I can a buy a shotgun with a 28 inch barrels and cut the stock without compromizing the balance and/or swing of the gun?

I have a Savage 311 20 ga that has unreasonably beefy barrels and the balance point was well out in front of the hinge. I slightly enlarged the stock bolt hole with a forstner bit to accept nickels. The photo shows how many nickels it took to get the balance well between the hands, pretty much on the hinge pin. With weights of some sort in the stock you should be able to fine tune your gun as well.IMG_1159.jpg
 
I'm built like a hobbit so all my guns need to be modified, if you take an inch or so off the stock you might not notice but if so a small bag of birdshot held in with a dowel under the recoil pad will bring the weight back. I shoot a 6lb Franchi I shortened and it doesn't affect me but some people may find a barrel heavy gun unpleasant.

Cutting it yourself?

The wood is pretty light and a lot closer to the balance point, so I don't *think* it'd affect it too much. Always thought of upland guns as being shorter than 28", but that and the balance is somewhat individual taste.

No not myself. I would ask a certified gunsmith.

they are normally around 26-28 but a lot of italian shotgun , i’m looking seems to be 28’’. I think the same thing

Houge makes a 12” & 14” lop stock set for the Rem 870, it’s a synthetic with a rubber overmold but it is short, I can’t remember if they make it for anything else.

Was going to suggest wrapping some masking tape around, marking it in several places, and starting a cut from different directions. Easy to get off line.

I'd do it myself, but suggest cutting conservatively, and then using an orbital with aggressive disc to finish it nice and flat.

If you have to add a little weight rearward a couple, few holes drilled to put some weight in should work.

Shouldn't take much, and again, my own preference would likely be just big enough for 2 or 3 extra shells, just in case.
 
You can also try a youth or lady’s model out first to see the fit. Remington made upland specials that had shorter barrels also. Best to try before you buy.
 
I would start by looking at ladies or youth models, with a shorter length of pull but it's easy to add weight into the butt stock to change the balance.
