CVA 50 CAL SIDELOCK, looking for load help

Hi, I have a early 1980's cva 50 cal hawkins sidelock. I am looking for load info on useing 200gr saboted bullets. any thoughts? I want to use it for deer hunting.

I would atart with 60 to 70 grains of 2F & work from there

I use a 205 gr cast bullet (.44-40) in a green MMP sabot with 70 grs of Pyrodex or FFFg black. Very accurate, powerful load - about 1700 fps. The sabot packaging says you can go up to 90 grs.

Check your rate of twist to see if it's 1:48" or faster. If not, you're better off using a patched round ball and getting close.

In both my THOMPSON New Englander and SAFARI hawkin 1-48'' .50 cal. I shoot 220 cast .45cal.453'' sabots with 70 gr.3f. easy target load...accurate.

Why do you want to use a sabot when you can use a .490 round ball with a patch.
