I am about to purchase a Berretta Storm. I reload cast bullets so cost of the cartridges is a wash. My question is which one, 9MM or .40S&W?

The gun will be used in Multi-Gun matchs and for plinking at the range.

I have a Storm in .40 and find it a blast at the range. No issues for me, but I'm guessing the 9mm won't have issue either.

The main reason I went with .40 is because I have other firearms that use it so I didn't have to stock up more ammo in different calibers.

Not very helpful sorry, but my 2cents.

I really think it comes down to personal preference, as I really don't think in the context of competition shooting and plinking one caliber is superior over the other. I also cast and load all my rounds. I find casting the smaller 9mm bullets a little more fussier than 40 but nominally so. For whatever reason I have never really appreciated the 40 cal round as anything more than a defensive LEO round, the recoil and accuracy have always seemed worse than my 9mm and 45acp chambered guns(again this is a personal preference).

If you get a 9mm storm I understand you can use a Beretta 96 -40 S&W mag to fit and thus legaly increasing the amount of 9mm rounds(approximately 13 rounds) you can fit in the mag. Thats the one thing that truely annoys me is not being able to use the full capacity of my neutered Beretta 92 - 10/15 round Beretta mags in the Storm.

If you ever decide to go non restricted(highly recommend), 9mm barrels seem to be more easily sourced at the moment.

non restricted vs restricted pics, clearly the one on top is less evil

9mm, uses less lead :)

I would also imagine 9mm's smaller frontal area and round nose profile should give it the edge at longer distances, but neither caliber is a long range gun...

9mm at lower grains goes faster than .40sw.

However when 9mm and .40sw have the same grain the .40sw goes faster.

And as a bonus, the 9mm might be easier to reload as it is a widely adopted round and has more items for it (correct me if I am wrong plz).

Wiki as my source:

9mm: 7.45 g (115.0 gr) JHP +P+ 435 m/s (1,430 ft/s)

9mm: 9.1 g (140 gr) FMJ 305 m/s (1,000 ft/s)
vs
.40SW: 135 gr (8.7 g) Federal Premium JHP Low Recoil 1,190 ft/s (360 m/s)

Get it in .40cal, which gets the most out of the longer barrel. With a 18.5" barrel .40cal is doing 44mag velocities. I shoot cast out of mine all the time and plink with it out to 200m. This gun is very accurate and cheap to shoot. Invest in the longer barrel and you have a excellent go anywhere rifle with a 10rd mag. I use the NCstar 4x32 scope on mine and the bullet drop compensator works well at the longer ranges, reducing the holdover.

OK I settled on the 9MM version. Help me out with the sights. I am thinking a red dot sight for no more than $100. Is there one that stands out?

I have seen a CZ Storm with a compensator on it. Anyone knows who makes them for the Storm?
