Cylinder bore ammo suggestions

I have a Savage model 24 in 22lr 20 ga with 20" barrels and cylinder choke and was hopeing to find some suggestions on what ammo could possibly tighten my patterns up a bit. I am fairly happy with it out to 20 yds or so but it opens up really quick after that. I have tried federal upland, winchester super x and remington target loads so far (that's about all I can in my area). I'm not expecting super tight patterns by any means but would like if I could shoot 30 yds without holes the size of my hand in the pattern. Any suggestions would be great.
 
I can't suggest a particular brand of ammo but something loaded to a bit less pressure , I handload shells to a lower operating pressure and they drastically tighten the pattern from my coach gun compared to the cheap Winchester stuff , also a bit bigger shot will help a bit
 
Thanks for the info dnepr. I am planning to get into reloading for shotguns eventually too. I did some patterning today at 30 yds shooting 3 of the same brand at a 30" circle and found the 1oz federals to be the worst with an average 38% inside the circle and only 3 pellets inside a 4" circle in the middle and quite a few of the holes were deformed because of soft shot. Winchester 1oz were a bit better with 42% and 5 in the middle. The cheapo remington top gun 7/8oz were the best with 57% and 16 pellets in the middle with no deformed holes so I guess their lead is quite a bit harder. This is all using 7.5 shot so I think I will try to find some remington 7/8 oz in #6 shot and see how they work.

The fact the Remingtons have less shot in them might be part of it - less deformation from pellets hitting each other perhaps? That could cause your patterns to tighten I would think.
 
suggest you look for something with a "rear-braking" wad.

I used prairie storm in 12G last year with improved cylinder choke and was impressed with how tight it is.

Do they offer the same thing in 20G??
 
I used Winchester AA ammo in my Mossberg 590A1 (also cylinder bore) for grouse last year and was VERY impressed with how well it did.
 
Yeah it is cylinder, I had a gunsmith check it. The barrel has no marking for what choke it is either so I had it measured. He thought they possibly weren't the original barrels. After that I researched it a bit and found out they definitely aren't as it is a model p and they all came with 24" barrels and mine are only 20". Unfortunately I didn't know much about them when I came across this one at a gun show, but it's still my favorite gun to carry around and the one I don't think I will ever get rid of.
