just shoot it as it is
Is the pitting really deep ? I've had good sucess with polishing out, light pitting.
Is the pitting in the cylinder bores or on the outside?
You could try western gun parts ,long shot.
If it was just on the out side , it could be refinished, would depend on the depth and location of the pits
whether it would look any better?
There are a couple of 17's for sale in the EE. $600-$645 or just shoot what you have and enjoy.
I am thinking about replacing a pitted cylinder on a otherwise VG+ S&W model 17-2. Odds of finding a used cylinder? Wondering how much I may be looking at ($) for the cylinder and fitting, or just shoot it as it is.
Thank you in advance.
Any chance of posting some pics? (I could post them for you if you PM me).It is on the outside, not cylinder grooves or bores.
If you're going to sell it and pick up a nicer one from the EE shoot me a PM I'm interested.![]()

You might be able to refinish the cyl. yourself with 400 W&D and some elbow grease, followed by Mark Lee Express Blue, which Henry at Budget Shooter Supply can get you if no one has it. I stripped a parkerized replacement barrel for a S&W Model 10 and reblued it and it came out well. I need to re-do the cylinder now as I didn't give it enough applications. It's a rust blue system, where the parts are degreased and dipped in boiling water, then the rust bluing swabbed on (2 coats), then flushed w.boiling water and "carded" with (ideally) a very fine SS wire brush, but degreased 0000 steel wool also works. More work than cold blue such as Oxypho Blue etc. but produces a nice finish.
