I took this rifle out the other day to take care of a skunk problem and just love shooting this rifle with iron sights. With the long barrel, I have no problem using it. It would be challenging if the barrel was shorter with my aging eye site. My CZ is the 252-2E ZKM Super exclusive model and I'm not sure my kids will appreciate this rifle when I'm no longer around.

Anyone else like iron sites and a long barrel ?
 
Nope, exact opposite.
I dislike long barrels.
I have a CZ 452 with a 16" barrel and a red dot site.
I have no problems hitting what I'm aiming at.
It's a very handy size, I can't imagine having an extra foot of barrel to swing into position.
 
I can understand liking the longer sight radius. It makes sense if you’re using an diopter type sight as well to get your adjustments closer to the standard “click” value. As a side note though, 28” of barrel has to be at the point of loosing potential velocity in a 22lr doesn’t it?
 
Couldn't tell you on velocity and the iron sight are just the standard that is supplied by CZ. This rifle is used in more open areas but I do under stand the problem with swing.
 
I have the same cz452 w 28" barrel.
I really enjoy shooting it and i shoot it well.
Have no idea if velocity is reduced and really doesnt matter. Gophers and paper haven't noticed any difference.
I have three other 452/453s if I want a shorter barrel. They all shoot well. I wish cz still made the 452 and 527. Great models.

I generally prefer a 20” or shorter barrel however I can imagine the long barrel is advantageous with the iron sights and probably good reduction in sound compared to a short barrel 22.

I find it unfortunate how many rifles come without iron sights as I do enjoy using irons over optics in certain applications
 
I read that a 22LR hits its maximum velocity at around 16 inches of barrel. Any longer slows it down with the additional friction.
I much prefer the cz with the 16 inch barrel as well, and with a scope it is every bit as accurate.
 
In addition to a handful of CZs I recall that a few LONGER barreled Bruno .22 I had were acoustically very mild mannered with Standard velocity ammo and pleasantly accurate without having to jump through hoops lot testing…
Always as in life there are trade offs, plus or minus, can’t have your cake and eat it too, can’t suck and blow at the same time ….
Speed isn’t the be all & end all especially if your playing only with a .22 rimfire. Maybe if your playing the games that take you out to 500 yards and you feel that squeezing every foot per second gives you a leg up over the competition then so be it and go for it. Some manufacturers are eventually going to market .22LR labelled ‘Supercaliberabalisticfragalisticextraspeedultralongerrangeraladoses’…$500/brick.lol

Like I tell my son I can easily compensate for a slower velocity with just a couple of clicks ‘up’ on the turrets. But he doesn’t listen because he’s part of the younger generation that knows better…
Seems the current trends obscure the overall big picture. Can’t see the forest for all the trees syndrome.

I have that same 452, love it. Also, have not used the yardage markers. Would be interesting to see how accurate they are with the ammo I use.

I agree, different barrel length for different applications... and the lines are blurry and it really is whatever floats one's boat.

My 452 with iron sites is a beauty with 24" for site radius, my 457 with a 20" heavy barrel is good for balancing my PRS rig, and the 10/22 backpack gun I want to set up will likely get a 16" for packability.

As for MV... I mean, I will take what I can get, but will prioritize other functions. For a pack gun or long range from a bench, 16" is definitely in the running!

Between two rounds, one 50 fps faster, how much flatter will the trajectory? Readers in general may wish to consider if the difference is significant.

To illustrate, when zeroed at 50 yards, a round with an MV of 1050 fps strikes about 9" low at 100. A round that's 1100 fps strikes about 8.4" low at 100. That's a difference of 0.6". At 200 yards, still zeroed at 50, the slower round strikes about 58" low, while the faster one is about 54" low.

To show this another way, when zeroed at 100 yards the slower round will be about 4.5" high at the 50 yard mark. The faster round will be about 4.2" high at the half-way point.

Of course the faster round will have more wind drift than the slower one.
 
Longest Iron sight rifle I had was my 32" long Rolling block in 22LR.

But my Aperture Anschutz is a 25" barrel, and I had some Cooeys with 27s, and a Toz with a 25" that I put a rear peep.

Most of my Target guns have a 20-25" barrel.

If 16" is the ideal length, then why didn't Anschutz get the message :p

Reaching maximum velocity doesn't equal accuracy.

Same as why match 22LR ammo isn't HV, and most of it is Standard Velocity. Faster isn't necessary better.
