Was plinking with my American today and some Win Wildcat .22LR and found several times that the fired case would not extract properly. Sometimes rebolting it would make it come out and sometimes I had to use a cleaning rod through the muzzle and push the case out.

This has never happened before and the gun only has about 600rds through it and no cleaning of the barrel or chamber has been done. I cleaned the bolt face with a tooth brush as there was a little crud buildup on the extractor claws, but it continued to not extract the case every 3 to 4 times for 50 rounds.

Is it the cheap ammo, dirty chamber or extractor problem?

I'd certainly start by eliminating the possibility that the chamber is dirty by cleaning it and inspecting it for any anomolies like burrs, marks or foreign material. How's the extractor look? The bolt is fairly easy to dissassemble and clean. Maybe something is holding the extractor back from springing down tightly. I'd clean and inspect it as well.

Do what Grizzly said above, then try different ammo. I have had extractions issues with Winchester Ammo, try Remington Thunderbolts and CCI Stingers. Something about the case on these they usually extract better.

Is it only having these extraction issues when the gun/chamber is hot....after having shot many rapid shots, do the problems start?

They were all shot on cool days and slow fire. Nothing fast. The bolt was stripped completely when I got the gun new and oiled lightly. No rapid fire or heating issues. I suspect the brass is the problem. Will try some different ammo when I get home in a few weeks. I will check under the extractors too. Thanks for the tips.
