I've just finished thinning my rifle collection and looking to pick up a "deluxe" .22lr. I'm stuck between the Marlin 39A and a Cz 452 Lux. I chose these two because I'm not planning on putting any optics on the gun.

I had the opportunity to handle the Cz at a local shop and it seemed very nice. However , I later read on some forum (can't remember which one) that the Lux has only one receiver screw attaching it to the stock, and the American has two. This doesn't make much sense. I checked the exploded diagram on the Cz site and see two screws. Does anyone have a 452 Lux ? How many receiver screws?

Any opinions on these guns for hunting small game? The Cz is a little cheaper, but with a couple of extra mags it'll come out to the same price.

Thaks, Steve

It really depends on whether you would prefer a bolt action or a lever. These are both fine rifles. Either would prove satisfactory.

I have several bolts but not a CZ and I have a 39A. I originally had a rear peep sight on it, changed to a good scope and have gone back to the peep sight. It is drilled and tapped for a frame mounted peep sight.

I really enjoy it for offhand plinking and it is more than accurate for me. Bench accuracy may not be up to the standard of my Walther target rifle or custom BSA Martini, but the 39a is a lot more fun. It has taken a lot of groundhogs over the years. :D :D

It is heavy enough to be stable when shooting offhand. The trigger is not great, a bit heavy but acceptable when you get used to it. I'm sure a gunsmith could easily clean it up.

Mine was a present and it is now about 30 years old and still going strong.

The fact that one's a lever and one's a bolt is why it's so hard to decide.:)
They both have 24" barrels but I do believe the Marlin is a little heavier, which may help with stability when shooting offhand, for hunting, as was mentioned above.

Like Sandroad, I would put a Williams peep on the Marlin, just like the one on my 1894.
i really need to get my hands on a 39 to feel how I like it. I've never held one. That would go a long way to make up my mind. Hopefully there'll be one at the Vankleek show next week.

Thanks

CZ 452 Lux and american have 2 action screw and CZ452 Varmint(heavy barrel) have 1.

from what i heard american has slighty more accurate than varmint -I dont know why.
maybe varmint use diffrent action than Lux and american to acomodate for larger diameter barrel ?

I went to the Vankleek Hill show today and was able to handle a Marlin 39. The price was very reasonable yet I didn't buy it. I guess I'm going to get the CZ.:) Thanks for the help folks.
