Pros and cons to each? We know the accuracy of the CZ, and I know the 457 is coming out.

One big plus, for me at least, is they say the stocks are compatible between the T3 and the T1x series.

What else? I wasn’t a huge fan of the T3. What have they done better?

Was at Sail Oshawa and tried both. For me the T1x bolt action was smoother than the CZ. I like the option of a 16" barrel and threaded. Too bad the T1x was a 17HMR, had it been a 22lr I would have been 650 poorer right there and then.

As for the trigger, I already have a T3x and very happy with the Tikka factory trigger so I'm guessing the trigger will be the same with the T1x. Unfortunately Sail policy does not allow customer access to the trigger.

Do we know the accuracy of the CZ 455? The barrel determines its accuracy to a great extent. Unfortunately the quality of CZ 455 barrels has not had a consistent record. I know this from personal experience. I've had two 455's and one of them was a very poor shooting rifle -- until it got a new barrel and was pillar and glass bedded. Out-of-the-box it shot so poorly that it was challenging to hold 1" at 25 - 30 yards. I think this particular rifle was an anomaly as it is unusual for a CZ to shoot so poorly. The other was better, meeting CZ's unofficial accuracy goal of one inch at 50 yards. The CZ 452's and 453's I've had did much better.

The T1X is relatively new, so there are not many detailed reports of its accuracy, although there are very encouraging reports. Unfortunately with winter soon, if not already, gripping much of the country, the number of shooters is low, and lower still for new Tikka rimfire. It would be nice to see full targets posted complete with warts and all. What we have seen is mostly cherry-picked target results that can be very misleading. I have hopes that the T1X will be a good shooter as I recently ordered one, and Tikka rifles have a reputation for accuracy. There are no guarantees with mass-produced rifles, however, and time will tell.

The CZ's have an advantage in my view of being available with wood stocks, and the 457 models, like those before them, have a variety from which to choose. The CZ 457 Varmint MTR is said to have a match chamber which offers the tantalizing prospect of improved accuracy over its predecessors. But again, time will tell.

Perhaps the new CZ 457's are aiming to compete with the Tikka T1X. It should be interesting to see how things work out.

For me, wood stocks will be out of decision, I will be going synthetic. Two models of the CZ I had been looking at were the “Tacticooll or the varmint. Both heavier barreled. Main purpose for me will be a rimfire PRS type rifle. For gophers and general fun I have my Remington 597, I just want to get away from the semi auto side for that.

And yes, you will find lemons in all manufactures. I didn’t like the T3 tha5 I had mainly because of accuracy. Best I could get out of it was 3” at 100 yards.

Yeah, the T1x is fairly new but I don’t just need cold weather reports. I’d welcome any good, fair, unbiased reviews anyone has come across in English, of either rifle.

The stock formerly known as "tacticool" by Boyds (now Pro Varmint) is made of laminate wood, while the CZ 455 Varmint stock is walnut. The barreled actions will be the same in both, the Varmint heavy barrel. The CZ model with a synthetic stock will have a sporter profile barrel.

The point I was making about my CZ lemon was that CZ 455 barrel quality has been inconsistent, and that is simply a fact. Those with broad experience with CZ 455's are unlikely to dispute that.

The T1X is indeed "fairly new". In fact it's so new as to have been available in Canada for only a matter of weeks. As a result, accuracy reports by Canadians at this time will be cold weather reports because as of today it is officially winter.

Because the T1X has only been available for a short time, both here and elsewhere, there is a dearth of unbiased reviews. In any case, any review of the CZ 455 will not necessarily be valid for all 455's, whatever barrel profile is used. The long and short of it is that when it comes to barrel quality control, it's somewhat of a lottery. You could get very lucky with the one you get or you could be unlucky. For more information about CZ rimfires, see RFC.

With any rifle, I say buy both! You can never have too many guns. When it comes to CZ the 455 has been around longer and as already mentioned there will be lemons in anything mass produced, but most are pretty good shooters and there's a decent sized aftermarket. The T1X is what, only a year old? Tikka has always made really good rifles for the money, however, with any brand new products there probaly will be a growing pain problem. It happens, its not a case of poor design or lack of ability to make a decent product, these things just happen. My 2 cents is right now I would buy a CZ 455, its very proven and there a lot more variety to suit your needs. However, in a year from now I'd pick up a T1X because you can never have enough 22's!

Varmint Synthetic

And the Tacticool, from everything I found, was a composite/synthetic, not wood. At least the models I was looking at.

I would love to buy both, and I might have to. My son, 13, will be joining me for this as well. He’s already taking gophers past 100 with his 597.

I stand corrected about the Varmint Synthetic. The tacticool stock according to CZ-USA is black painted laminate.

The Tacticool is discontinued so more than likely it’ll be the Varmint in synthetic or the T1X. The CZ is a touch cheaper however. I still need to handle them personally. The add ons to help make the T1X feel better in the hands is also a small bonus.

The Tacticool stock lives on as the Boyd's Pro Varmint.
I love my CZ452 Varmint, but I do not have a 455.
We live in exciting times, I am looking forward to learning about the Tikka T1X ( More models coming) and the CZ 457.

I have indivertibly bought both and have tested both out to 100 yards. I am a huge CZ fan and loved the looks of the synthetic stock and muzzle break on the CZ 455. I had the Tikka on order since last March and since it wasn't showing up I decided to buy the CZ 455 Varmint Synthetic . A week later the Tikka showed up. The trigger on the Tikka is easier to adjust and breaks like glass . At 50 and 100 yards the rifles shot about the same .50 with the Tikka having slightly smaller groups and less sensitive to ammunition.
The day I shot was cool and blustery and you needed to pay attention to the wind. They both shot around 1.25 at 100 with SK Plus . The tikka has the advantage of a better trigger system and with the modular design you can change grip angles and length of pull pretty quickly. Both fine rifles and great fun to shoot. I don't care for the Tikka 10 shot mag sine you can't take it apart to clean it and it is not flush with the stock. Both are great rifles ! Going to be tough deciding which one to sell .

It’s a lot better than the CZ 10 shot though. The Tikka is Double stacked and the CZ is single stacked?

Well I have not shot a Tikka TX1, so I can not compare.

However, I do enjoy my CZ455. I did originally order a .22LR Varmint with the bull barrel. It shot ok, however, I did not like the slight creep in the trigger, so I picked up a Yo Dave trigger kit. The trigger now has about a 1-1.5 lb pull. Just for versatility, I saw a 17HMR fluted bull barrel, so I then converted my 455 to that. Picked up a Vortex 18-40 scope (still wish the receiver was drilled and tapped) But I am very happy with how it shoots.

I do agree that the Varmint is a bit on the heavy side. But if you are not lugging it around, it is a joy to shoot.

W.
