CZ 455 Varmint Precision Trainer

...It looks classy, nice thumb hole stock with fluted barrel...
I loved the looks of the grey laminate stock, but the thumbhole design is really not very practical for a bolt action. I was seriously considering upgrading to a grey laminate ProVarmint stock (which is the design I had on my CZ452 and loved the ergonomics) for the CZ455 - however before I could place the order with Boyds, savagecanuck offered me a really good deal on the MPR . I was sceptical at first since my 1/2" challenge groups were better with the CZ than SC had achieved with the MPR, but he let me shoot it and after that I couldn't resist. The difference in accuracy between the 2 rifles may be negligible, but the difference in feel is substantial.

Sounds like the 455 models are to be avoided!

My experience has been quite the opposite...

Here's the thing, the 455 action is actually pretty good and the platform can perform amazingly well. The issue is a lack of consistency in the factory production, these rifles seem to be bi-polar in their performance. They do have to change out the chamber reamers and lathe bits (for the crowning) every now and then... lol... so with fresh tooling the best CZ's will be produced. It appears they then proceed to run the tooling ragged and make no effort to check for machining defects in house, so many bad examples are also being shipped out. Line 10 CZ's up on a rack, and you'll see everything from great performance, to OK accuracy, to downright terrible. Pick one at random, and I have no confidence that it'll be a good one :(

That said, it bears repeating that the 455 action is not at fault here, if it wasn't good I wouldn't waste my time doing a custom build off one. With some tweaks (polishing, striker tip mod, reduced power striker spring), pillared/bedded Boyd's stock and custom fit match barrel, these rifles will give any Annie a run for their money, if not take the money from them ;)

Go with the 452 Varmint and throw it in a Manners carbon fiber stock. I'd take this over my Anschutz 1712 and 1727F if I had to choose only one. Sorry Annie lovers 🙄

Mind your manners.. I do mind your asking. :p

I got it from Manners directly. You'll have to have someone like IRG or Prophet River handle the import though as Manners will need to ship to their FFL before it gets sent up. Feel free to PM me if you want any tips before you order as there's a few things that are worth having Manners install on the stock that most people forget.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your Manners stock?

Ha! Well played! ;)

Aw dang, I was hoping you had found a Canadian connection for Manners. But thanks for the offer! I will take you up on that if I do end up deciding to bring one in from down south.
