Hi guys, a newbie here. Just got my PAL 2 months ago. Plan to get a bolt action 22LR rifle soon. Either CZ 457 or Tikka T1X will be a good choice. I plan to just do target shooting for fun and want to get a good value rifle that I can play with for long-time and grow with it. Which one would you recommend? Please let me know your advice.

(One thing I am not very sure is that there are multiple different models from CZ 457. A little bit confusing for a newbie to know which one to choose. Now, I am leaning toward getting a Tikka T1X.)

Whatever model CZ457 has a match chamber. I’ve got 10’s of thousands of rounds through a T1X. Good rifle, but CZ barrel and feeding is better.

I have a Tikka T1X with 16” barrel, Leupold scope and rings which works well as a range, varmint and small game rifle. I can recommend it for its great trigger, smooth bolt, accuracy and 10 round mag. I have not owned a CZ but hear good things about them however I don’t believe they will chamber CCI Stingers which my Tikka will. Probably can’t go wrong with either - lots of you tube videos that compare both.

My current rig is a CZ 457 MTR in a MDT XRS chassis.

I suggest starting with a CZ 457 MTR as it comes with the match chamber. CZ's extraction and ejection system is also more reliable than that on the Tikka. Barrel changes are easy on the CZ as the barrel is not glued in like it is on the Tikka. The CZ aftermarket is much more plentiful for upgrades, triggers, chassis, mods, etc. Also, if you adjust the CZ trigger properly, you can get it down to a very nice break that is just as good, to me, as the Tikka. And if you want it quite light, you can add a $15 spring.

Between those two choices, I'd also say CZ. A simple spring change is all that's needed to improve the CZ trigger, which is the only real advantage the Tikka has on it.

If you're target shooting exclusively, consider an entry-level Anschutz too. A used 1903, for example, can be found for a decent price, and will shoot circles around both. Buy once, cry once. If you get really serious about target shooting, you're going to end up buying an Annie (or something similar) anyway - lol.

It's a really fun past time, and both CZ and Tikka make nice rifles - you won't really go wrong with either.

Good luck.

Both are great rifles. My wife and I each have a Tikka T1x and have not had 1 issue with either of them. Accuracy is outstanding. It all comes down to personal preference.

My T1 has mag issues with some brands of ammo, a friend has same issues, shells tend to stovepipe when pushing bolt forward. Also own 4 CZ from 452, to 457, no issues with mags. Both makes are accurate shooters.

I have a CZ V-MTR in 22LR as well as a CZ-455 SS LUX in 22lr. I have a mix of steel and plastic mags and have had NO probs with ANY AMMO, from Fed Auto-Match to Lapua Center-X. Both rifles have had 5-shot groups UNDER 0.250" @ 50 yds, (altho 0.5s" are more common) with the 455 using a 6-24x50 FFP and the V-MTR using a 8-34x56 FFP. And ca 1.0-1.5" at 100 yds.

My experience has been that the T1x is a little more accurate than the (multiple) cz’s I’ve had and just as reliable. That said, the cz mtr stock is pretty nice to shoot from the bench and doesn’t cost that much more than a plastic stocked T1x if you find them on sale. The plastic T1x stock isn’t the best for bench shooting. It works but I find the fore-end too narrow and comb too low. YMMV

I’ve looked at this as well! (My thread is mentioned earlier in the post)

So if you’re spending budget is capped out at tikka price then I’d go tikka but if you’re comparing other options like the match chamber cz or stuff that comes in a better rifle stock you also need to look at the t1x upr.

However I have seen enough of both to know that at base entry price they tend to be so close it’s really a comfort thing. Keep in mind with CZ you have barrel swapping abilities so you can have a 22lr and 17 hmr. Which could be handy if you like that kind of thing!

I own and run a t1x with a trigger spring upgrade and basically only shoot it 100 yards or further because any closer and I get bored of how accurate it is. (Mine loves eley ammo.)

I still want a cz because I can get barrel swapping and it will likely become my hunting gun unless I get another lh 10/22 competition. Which I regret selling but that’s a story for another time.

Either way I can assure you that you’re going to be happy. Find whatever ammo your rifle likes and buy allot of it so you don’t have to buy again anytime soon.

If you can shoot both and see which ergonomics you like. My t1x lives in a t3x CTR chassis with the beaver tail forend, Arca rail and a Kali’s rekindle cheek riser.

Cheers,
B

The tougher choice is which scope to get for either......

Between those two choices, I'd also say CZ. A simple spring change is all that's needed to improve the CZ trigger, which is the only real advantage the Tikka has on it.

^agreed on both.

I think for anyone totally new to guns like the OP, my hunch is that a Tikka will feel better...the CZ (if brand new) will feel very stiff when cycling the action. They do "break in" before long. In Trudeau's Canada I don't own any guns but I know a guy who has a 457 and a T1x and he reaches for T1x 9/10 times. Make no mistake, they're both excellent guns and both would serve the OP well. If going with the CZ, be sure to understand what all the stock styles are meant for. It matters.

I have the Tikka MTR 16" and the CZ 457 synthetic. They are both nice and have plenty of pros going for both of them. I think that's what makes this a tougher comparison. The tikka has more cons though for me, slightly less accurate, a badly designed mag, will have extraction issues long before the CZ with sticky ammo. This CZ also coated for bad weather. I'm sure this may have been mentioned before already.
