Need your opinion on this, should I get this Action or instead get the MTR complete rifle. There is a price difference of $250.00 between the 2, but of course I still need a chassis( XRS) for the Varmint Action , my only concern with the complete MTR is what if the factory stock doesn’t fit good on me, then I would need to replace with a chassis. Is there a great difference between the Varmint Match and MTR? In accuracy, .. might be joining a PRS style shoots and bench shooting , Thanks

I believe they are the exact same match barrel.i think that ? Was asked when they came out with no definitive answer.so interesting.as for the stock on mtr seems to be well liked for bench shooting.i have switched my tx3 varmint stock on my 223 with a chassis, wish I didn't.it is taking getting used to shooting with a chassis.not sure what chassis your looking at but might be hard to find one for $250.

$250 was the price difference between theVarmint Action and Complete MTR, the XRS is around $500, If I go with the MTR its gonna be $250 plus $500 if the MTR stock doesn’t fit me well.

Ya I get that I mean the 250 difference in trying to find a chassis for that price.

If you are actually going to be shooting prs style positional stuff often, a chassis makes it easier to shoot well. It’s a tool designed specifically for the job and it helps. I wish more manufacturers would offer barreled actions, or just actions for that matter.

Buy the barrelled action and put it in a chassis. If for some reason you decide you want the original wood stock instead, sell the chassis and buy a used MTR stock from the EE. They pop up from time to time for $200ish.

I say get the CZ 457 Varmint Match Barreled Action only and buy the chassis you want. Don't waste the extra money for the wood stock that will most likely sit in the closest. You may even upgrade the barrel in the future. The XRS chassis is very nice and I prefer it over a aluminum chassis.

How about accuracy?, really big difference between the 2?,

The chassis will not make you shoot better off the bench. As long as the barrel is free floated it’s a wash. As soon as you shoot positional stages under time limits, the chassis will make you shoot better. I shoot my chassis rifle better under such conditions, although my stocked rifle shoots tighter off the bench.

What is your definition of accuracy? Bench rest accuracy or PRS accuracy?

You may very well be happy with the factory barrel and the right ammo combo. Or maybe it's not enough and want a Lilja barrel with a shim kit for custom headspace.

Talking about bench accuracy, and its inherent accuracy, its my understanding that the MTR has a match chamber , well thats everybody is saying,

The match chamber should help with accuracy. Match chambers usually shoot better than none match chambers. They are less willing to gobble cheap ammo though. 22LR accuracy is hugely ammo dependent. Decent ammo with reasonably consistent velocities starts around $100/500. The more expensive ammo is sorted by consistency at the factory and priced accordingly. $180 to $330/500 but you need to test different lots to see what your rifle likes. If you buy CCI Standard Velocity for $60+/100, a 10 rnd group at 100 will often show 6-8 inside 1 1/4”, but the other shots will be high or low. If you find the high end ammo that shoots well in your rifle, that AVERAGE 10 rnd group might be right around or under 1”. Many people shoot 5 rnd groups and cherry pick which ones they show online.

So placed my order this morning of 2 Actions for me and my son, btw which mags is recommended, polymer or steel, thanks

I prefer metal and the last time I checked Firearms outlet had both 5 and 10 metal mags in stock... I brought another 10rd metal mag. Two weeks ago.

I like the weight and feel of the metal mags.

Thanks for all your feedbacks ,

I'm lookin at the 457 match, not sure on the stock either,I shot a guys at the range and I liked it.let me know what chassis you get and how that works out.i have 2 chassis on my 223 tikka and savage and find it hard to get behind at the table,I don't think the same would be true with a 22lr.

From shotguns to rifles even my “assault rifles “ lol, LOP is always a big factor for me, 13.25”13.50” is my ideal LOP, that’s one reason that I’m very hesitant to get the complete MTR , thinking of getting the MDT XRS for its adaptability from LOP and comb, the earliest I can fully complete this project will be around November, will get the parts one at time, maybe one a month, scope, chassis etc

January 4 I was lucky enough to pick up a brand new MTR for $89 more than these new barreled actions are priced for from Prophet River. also have another MTR stock sitting at home, when I seen these new match actions being released I got excited and thought I could fill my other MTR stock but then I seen the price.

The 457 came in today, tried running the bolt in the action, a little bit frustrated though, was expecting a better action fit and finish , a little bit rough, maybe a little polishing will improve, the Tikka was way more smooth,

Does anyone know where or if i can purchase just the 457 action alone? Have barell, chasis, magazines, just looking for action only. I thought of buying the cheapest 457 rifle for the action to serve as a donor but i wish i could just buy the action alone.
