I finally got to the range with my new pistol. CZ 52. for those that are not aware its the old Czech service pistol that I bought to compliment my VZ 58 carbine.

The pistol is the 7.62x25 that the Czechs chose to use instead of the Tokarev during the cold war. Its bigger, and heavier and looks like a makarov with a growth hormone problem.

Now, the reason I am writing this is for those of you that had no real reason to read the above. I am looking to see if anyone had the same problem that I did.

As I fire, my chubby palm rubs the safety upwards to the applied position. So on my 4th or 5th round it comes to be that all of a sudden I just cant fire. And I'm standding there thinking I have a stoppage or a missfire for a second and then I realize what has happened.

I know its not a terribly valuable gun, or a very nice one. But its minty, and origional and I'd like to keep it that way.

Have any of you met these criteria and pinned or otherwise blocked your safety with any success?

Thanks for your input.

... and I thought it was just me... I shoot left handed and the web of my thumb does this quite often. I have found that trying to get a lower, and firmer grip helps but not a perfect solution. I still like the gun though, cheap and fun to shoot.

Warning unrelated post:

I have small hands, so I have no problems :D... but I sure do want CZ52-2: Harrington Products competition firing pin and trigger enhancement... :(

I agree BuzzB. A lowerm firmer grip helps. And it is fun to shoot. I was surprised how powerful it is. I have shot a TOK before and it just isnt the same. As for a range report lets just abreviate it and say that its money well spent over a tokarev.

I will figure something out that solves this problem and is not noticeable from the appearance. I'll post more when I know.

But hey, did you notice where the shots are falling at 100m? Seems to me theres ony about 4-6 inches of drop. But I havent really printed that on paper yet.

Damd you baby seal Am looking for a CZ52 aswell you lucky bastard first you get posted too Chilliwack and then you find a CZ52.
Where did you buy it from and do they have more?

Try P&S Militaria that's where I got mine and I believe they had a few to sell (they still show them on the website). Jean is excellent to deal with and their prices are pretty decent too.

What I like most about my CZ is that it throws brass everywhere. Guys three or four spots down the line look around to see where the empties are coming from!

I got mine off of gunscanada.com

And YES! It does throw the brass far. Usually about 20 feet to my 4 O'clock, unless theres something, or someone, for it to bounce off of.

Dave, You'll find one. I dont know anyone who knows more gun websites than you.

And I do have one tip about the gun so far.

A weaker firing pin lock spring is a MUST, IMHO. Polishing the body of the FP and the Lock is also a good idea. I was getting a few light strikes out there yesturday. Everything is tickity boo now.

More to follow in a couple weeks re. the safety issue. I am attached out to the cadet camp in vernon for 2 weeks.

Good to hear From you DS!

Cz52

I know this problem you're having , I've had mine for 15 yrs or so and never a problem ( and this pistol just rocks off the firing line , guys line up to try it) ,until this spring ,one of the guys at the GC wants to try it out and on his second or third shot .....nothing WFT , I look over and wala the safety is on , off it goes and he resumes firing and two shots later same thing . So I watch him let loose the last few and here's what I saw , his hands are a little chunkier than mine and the the pistol appears to move more when recoiling and the web(or side) of his thumb is touching the safety a little bit with each shot till the safety just ingages( lower the thumb position of your right hand and over lock your left thumb on top ) . Never has this happened when I have shot this pistol . If you like this with the Norinco ammo you should it with the original milspec chech stuff huge muzzle blast and 1500fps muzzle vel. Yeah baby , and all the cases go to the far right hand back corner of the shelter from the firng line (ina hurry). The sights suck , but point and click(boom) works just fine .:D:D:D:D

Thats a good tip. Crossing my thumbs. I'll give that a go.

And the ammo I am using is 1952 Czech vintage. If I cant hit my target I will at least burn it, and deafen it. Theres lotsa poop in those rounds for sure!

Cz52

Hey Babyseal , I also add a hogue handall grip thingy just to keep it under control a little better . And if I remember correctly there was an even hotter ammo in 7.62x25 that was intended for machinegun use , it is not advised to use that in our pistols, just way too hot. Mine is arsenal stamped with crossed swords and the number 54 I asume it is the year of manufacture ,I see if I can get a picture posted. Quite the flame thrower eh? BBQ anyone?

I took my new (to me) CZ52 to the range on Saturday and the trigger pull was brutal, and I also had some light strikes. I'm wondering if I reassembled the firing pin block so it wasn't perfectly parallel with the firing pin causing the bad trigger pull and slightly binding the firing pin so it wasn't striking as hard as it should.

When I got home I cleaned her up and took out the firing pin and reassembled and the trigger pull seems a lot better now.

Will have to try again next weekend ;)

OK

I dissasemble her this week and heres what I did.
I am proud of this job because you cant see any of it from the outside.

-Polish firing pin and firing pin lock
-Install weaker firing pin lock spring
-polish hammer and sear
-polish both sides of trigger bar
-polish inside of frame side plate
-polish bearing surfaces inside frame (This was a pain)
-VERY CAREFULLY bent the tail end of the spring that acts as a detent to the safety to provide more positive engagement with the notches on the safety
-Deapened the notches in the safety

And I practiced holding it with a lower grip with crossed thumbs. After a few hours of dry firing with a home mad snap-cap it feels fairly comfy. After test firing tommorrow I my break down and get a hogue Hand-all.

So there is what I have done so far. It takes a fair bit of force to switch the safety now and the triggerpull isnt any lighty, but its certainly a hell of a lot less gritty. I have high hopes for the range tommorrow.

More to follow.

ok heres the lowdown.

For some reason I have a bad batch of ammo.

The laquer used to seal the primers in place has corodded or something and it leaves a black ring around the primers.

I would say that about half of the ammo I have lloked at in the crate I bought looks like this.

When firing this ammo about half of them dont fire on the first attempt. They always fire after waiting a few moments and recocking the hammer.
About 1 in 20 of these hangfires. Some delay about a quarter of a seconf and some an entire second.

The clean looking ones have a good record. About 90% of them fire on the first go.

I have absolved my firing pin of any fault in this matter because it will make a very solid imprint in any of the primers on the first go.

So, when buying ammo, watch out for the dreaded black ring.

Not only is it a pain in the ass, it has given me a hell of a flinch. It really sucks not knowing when your round is going to go off.

As for a range report.

The gun itself is awesome! There is hardly any drop at 100m! From a weaver stance I can shoot 4 inch groups at 25m. The triggerpull is so very much nicer now. I just have to get over my damned flinching.

And best of all, well next to the fact that it shoots I mean, is that the safety stays put now. It never shifted on me today and I put 6 boxes through her.

Bottom line is:

Good Gun
Watch out for a black ring around the primers when buying ammo.

I think I am S.O.L. for the $$$ I sunk on this crate of ammo. So I hope nobody else gets hit with one of these.
