Hey guys, my 22 Hornet rifle search has let me to this one, as a nice...light varmint gun that will go on long treks for groundhogs on days the heavy .223 needs a rest. Interested to hear from anyone who owns, or has owned an American...especially if was a 22 Hornet. This is the scope I have in mind for it too, any idea whether or not the bolt throw will be an issue? http://vortexcanada.net/products/riflescopes/viper_hs/viper_hs_2-5-10x44_bdc.html

Vanilla=boring? :)

Thanks for the input guys. I'm so curious to shoot a 22 Hornet...to get back into CZ...to get something non-Savage...and some departure from the really heavy varmint rig I carry now. CZ has plenty of history making 22 Hornets, and it just "says" go light in terms of the rifle weight to me. Plan B was a .204 Ruger, CZ527 Varmint but I think that would be too similar to the .223 I have now. One would never get used. Maybe the .223! :)

Boring in so much as .22 Hornets are never terribly "exciting", which is a good thing, mild report, do what you ask of them as well as a .223 for likely 90% of hunting. No issues, no problems, just worked well and was very accurate. Sounds like you've played with CZs before but the quality difference is enormous vs Savage.

I have owned a CZ and selling it was a mistake. (rimfire) Currently, the safe is rather Savage-centered and while they're great shooters, I'm really starting to think Savage is getting a little out of hand with their pricing. A $900 CZ feels like a $900 gun. A $700 Savage feels like a $500 gun, tops. I love them, don't get me wrong, just don't see them as being fairly-priced these days for what you're getting.

I think you are being quite generous to savage with that statement, they might shoot well in most cases, but the quality, fit and finish just aren't there. They are extremely basic tools that for the most part get the job done, but they sure aren't anything worth writing home about, or worth squat as an heirloom.

I have several CZ 527's in hornet including the piece that Ardent used to own. They all you really need for varmint eradication. Inexpensive to load for, very accurate, love the single set trigger. I use the Calhoon single shot adapter in all of my CZ hornet rifles. FS

I like mine very much, but when I got a BRNO 465, it kinda fell by the wayside.I'm planning on rebarreling mine to 17 Hornet if the parts ever show up.

Brutus, would you take the A-Bolt over the CZ 527? not familiar with the A-Bolt, thanks
IMHO the CZ most likely has better quality of a wooden stock versus the A-Bolt.
The stock material is my only beef with the Browning.
Wait a minute, come to think of it, I bought a lighter Timney replacement spring kit for this one too.

Edit: I went for the A-Bolt because it was the only LH repeater option in the Hornet.

Not to get off topic, but I heard that the new M42s are supposed to be priced at ~$450. If that's true, I agree with your statement 150%!
