CZ 527 Ebony .223 vs Rem 700

Ok, I have a nib Rem700 XCR TLR .223 barrel I've had for a couple years. I've slowly been gathering parts to make it the way I'd like, more a varmint rifle than tactical. I acquired a VLS stock, and also bottom metal with AICS magazines, but haven't switched anything over yet. Lots of other things going on, so takes me a while with projects :)

Now I've seen some pictures of the CZ 527 Ebony .223. I think I've fallen for the nice CZ wood and blued finish, as well that spiral hammer forged barrel.

Both rifles are 1 in 9" twist. The Remington is stainless and has 26in fluted barrel, CZ has a 22in. My use would be from shooting paper, to occasional ground hogs, to maybe some gophers if/when I ever get back west. Possibly some coyotes if the opportunity arises. Rem will give me 10 shots with the AICS, the CZ has 3 shot flush mags, and 5 shot available. The Rem has a factory 40x trigger, the CZ has the single set.

I can't really justify having both, I think they'd be too similar. Am I crazy to think of selling the Rem to get the CZ? Am I gaining anything? Would I be missing anything by sticking with the Rem? There wouldn't be a lot of difference financially.

Maybe I'm just looking for someone to help me justify another rifle.

Looks like you are correct. There's some conflicting information out there about CZ changing to 1 in 9" twist, but the one I was looking at appears to be 1 in 12" Guess I'll stick with the Remington.
 
On the plus side for the CZ is better feeding. The blocked 700 magazine doesn't feed as nicely as the CZ's single stack and short throw bolt. If your interest is more towards a varmint rifle than a tactical, normal length varmint and match bullets should satisfy you, and therefore there isn't a great advantage in the faster twist barrel. My 527 seems to appreciate 50 gr TNTs backed with 4895.
 
Personally, I would go with the bone stock CZ... you are likely to get most of your money back out of it... and it is a beautiful rifle and carries nicely with the three rounder. I have only held the Ebony, but owned three 527's in .223, including the FS... if I wasn't such a Ruger fan-boy, I would probably still own it... but went with the M77-UL MKII instead.
 
My Ebony has a 1:12 twist I sold my Remmy 700 to buy it for the looks and the single set trigger

I shoot 53 V-max for coyotes and 40 grs for gophers works for me :cool:
 
Thanks for the input guys. Boomer, the AICS magazines will give me single stack feeding for the Rem700, but I do prefer factory unmodified rifle. I still love the look of the CZ Ebony, but the one I was looking at got sold. I was hoping for faster twist to shoot a little heavier bullets. I already have a .222 that will shoot 50-55gr nicely. I do like the Rugers too Hoytcanon, and recently picked up a M77 .22 Hornet. Maybe it would make some sense to sell the Rem 223, and the .222 and go for the Ebony .223, if I find another.

I realy like the outside look of the Ebony barrel, I think it is part of the appeal of this special model but to each his own.

Why you can't use a 5 rounds mag in this rifle ? Is it because there is no *mag guide* in the trigger guard ?

BTW nice rig ! I would like to add a 527 varmint in .204 ruger in the near future.
 
X2 on the CZ trigger. I have one of the first ones to come into Vancouver when the introduced the Minimauser 22cal centrefire receiver. 5.2lbs. Weighs exactly the same as my CZ452 22lr. Personally I find the fit and finish far superior to American made guns. They are just so easy on the eye. And the quality is there. The 527 is my fave rifle hands down. I now own 4 CZs because I like the way the look, feel, and shoot. The set trigger is a killer too. They are pretty easy to sell if you change your mind. You do not see them come up for sale often. I think that is because most people just keep them
