I recently bought a very slightly used 527 carbine in 7.62x39. It is a sweet little rifle that I plan to use for practice, some deer hunting, and a step up caliber wise for my daughters. Unfortunately on my first range session, part way through the first box of Barnaul FMJ loads the tang of the stock split badly on both sides. One piece actually came totally off. To say that I am disappointed is an understatement, especially since this stock had nice colour and figure.

So my questions are;
- who does warranty work for CZ in Canada?
- any personal experience with this process?
- is there a source for buying another factory stock if CZ won't come good for it because I bought it used?
- should I glass bed any new stock before firing it or are the stocks usually stable?

Great little rifle and I'm surprised how much I like the 7.62x39 round. I'm considering buying either another carbine or FS 527 in 5.56 with the newer 1-9" barrel but I need more confidence about the stock issue first.

Thanks

I sent them an email inquiring about a stock for my Brno, can't remember the exact price but around 5 or 6 hundred rings a bell, I bought a Boyd's and had it glass bedded with a little relief where it contacts the tang.

I'd glue it together with wood glue if the piece that broke off fits well, clamp it with surgical tubing or even electrical tape pulled hard around the stock, or a combination of electrical tape and clamps depending on the surface area available for clamping.

It's a bit of an art but not to difficult and the key is to make sure the wood doesn't shift when clamping. I've repaired stocks that got broken during shipping and if you didn't know where to look you would never notice.

I bought a CZ 527 carbine as my first rifle for the reasons you've mentioned, QueensHorseman, and had the same problem. The walnut stock cracked behind the tang after my first day at the range in December with the same Barnaul ammo you used.

Grech Outdoors in Ontario is the CZ warranty dealer. I put in a request in early January and am still waiting for the part to come in. In the meantime, I had filed a complaint with CZ and they contacted me in March saying that they sent a shipment of new stocks to Grech and hopefully mine would be covered soon. Really too bad, though, because CZ has a reputation for reliability and it seems that the stock cracking issue is quite common.

CZ should honor it under warranty. Contact them directly or through the distributor. Just say you bought a new gun took it to the range and boom.

There are multiple reports on this happening in the last few months. All on the same rifle in the same cal. CZ must have messed up the inletting on a batch. Hopefully they get it all figured, CZ does not have a reputation for stocks breaking outside their Safari magnum series.

I finally removed the action from the stock last week and it is a mess. It appears there was minimal lug engagement, mostly on one side. The wood was cracked internally from the lug recess, through to the mag well. That allowed the rear of the action to impact the wrist area and split it there too. I tried messaging the distributor with no response so I will try to fix the stock with bedding compound and a set of bedded pillars. I had checked the action screws prior to firing it and they were tight. Everything looked great with a small clearance area behind the rear tang but I wouldn't fire another one without removing the action to inspect it and likely without glass bedding / reinforcing the lug area, especially if it's a 7.62. A brand new rifle would have been cheaper by far than the "decent deal" I got on this barely used one. It's a super handy little carbine but don't neglect to reinforce the bedding!

I had planned to buy a 527 FS in .223 but this experience will have to subside for a bit before I jump back in again.

Well you got my worry bug working ! I have a 223 in a full stock that I have shot and had no problems YET . I bed most of my rifles but go by the old saying - " if it ain't broke don't fix it " this one shoots so good I HAD-no intention of touching it . Now I'll have to look , I'm wishing I wouldn't have read this thread , but I will thank you if I find a problem .
boylouie - thanks for the feedback on the response from CZ

This will happen with a lot of different style rifles if the action screws are loose. Mausers are pretty notorious for it as well.

I guess this is more of a problem with the 7.62x39 versions than the 223 versions, since the recoil energy is approximately double, however I did check the action screws after reading the above comment!

I use some gloss black nail polish, cheaper then blue loctite and you can clean it off easier too.
Works on scope bases and rings well too.

I also had my stock split, although not as severely as yours by the sound of it. I also have the .223 version, with no issues.
I just glued the crack in my stock with gorilla glue, clamped as needed...No issues since then. These guns work the action screws loose in a hurry if some form of loctite is not used. I did not contact cz at all about my issue. I think i will, fantastic rifles, nice wood, it's a shame they are doing this.

For my CZ 527M, bought at Tenda, I've contacted CZ directly by email. It took a few weeks to find the right place but we are at the point where they are going to get the distributor to send a replacement stock to Tenda. I'm very disappointed that Tenda took a step back on this and left it with me to deal with but at least it's progressing. The rifle is warrantied for 5 years but the wood is only warrantied for 1 year, from what I read in my research. I didn't discover my hairline crack for 6 months do to low light conditions. When I took it out for some fun on a great day in March the sun was so bright it was hard to miss the crack. Once inside you need a flashlight to see it.

Some good news. After contacting CZ http://www.czub.cz/ and filling out the online complaint form I heard back from the sales manager a few days later. He asked for my serial number, model, and store I bought it from. I emailed back photos of the sales slip, rifle info, and the crack. I also asked if the replacement stock could be sent to the LGS to swap out rather than having me send it away.

Five days later I get an email from Tenda telling me that they have my stock and would I like to pick it up or have it mailed. I almost flew out the door in my rush to get it. :)
It looks as good as the original minus the crack. Just waiting to hear what inch pounds I should tighten it to before calling this one finished.

I'll PM you some info that might help you out with your issue.
