I am going to be in the market for a gun in the 6.5x55 caliber. I am looking at the cz 550 american and the tikka t3 hunter or maybe the tikka varmint. What i would be using this for is taget shooting at 100 yds, coyote hunting, deer hunting and possible moose hunting. Any opions of pros and cons of these models thanks

I prefer the CZ. They are better-looking, have fewer plastic parts, and the open top receiver makes for easier single loading. While it isn't necessary for non-dangerous game applications, I think that controlled feed actions are the more refined design.

One thing that particularly irks me about Tikkas is the cost of extra magazines. Why is it that they cost about $100 each when Magpul can make PMAGs for ARs that Questar sells for $25 each, even after having to pin them to 5 rounds? Both of them are made from injection molded plastic.

Comes down to wood or plastic both will do the job...............Harold

Uh you probably have not handled either if you say something like that...

The CZ is the better gun IMHO... Better fit and finish, better trigger, no plastic, etc... But handle both and judge for yourself.

I'd get the Tikka, I have that very gun.

The appeal of the swede is good killer, mild recoil. If I am shooting a cartridge like the swede I don't need it to weigh any more than 7.5 pounds all in with scope and mounts. The CZ would be at least a full pound more, the swede isn't something that really need CRF.

Get the nice light Tikka. Here are some targets I shot with mine with some pretty basic handloads.

I shot my buck at 258 yards offhand with it this year.

As a hard-core long distance target shooter, I place a great deal of importance on accuracy. I have owned several Tikkas and I am of the opinion that they produce the most consistently accurate factory rifles. I have a couple currently, and have owned several. I like the composite/stainless construction because it is a rifle, not a piece of furniture, and it rattles around the front of the truck.

After a moose hunt and getting my rifle "slimed" with blood and hair, I rinsed it under the tap. Not suggested for a wooden stock.

just be aware that the best hunting rifles are often a bit light for shooting several rounds in succession at targets. They need to cool down to prevent throat wear. As for magazines, well, I have only ever needed one when hunting, I have never broken one and they feed nicer than just about any magazine made.

tikka in wood

I believe the hunter model does come in wood. I do have a cz 452 in 17 hmr and it is a very nice gun, nice trigger. Dad has the tikka in 30-06 very accurate not as nice as a cz just wanted other people inputs to maybe make me think of other ideas. Thanks

Assume nothing, I have shot the CZ and my son owns a T3..........I like the warmth of walnut as well but they both are shooters...............also hate the idea of $75 mags............Harold

Because I like CRF actions, and because I and dislike plastic stocks, and because I dislike expensive plastic DBMs, I'd go with a CZ every time. As for accuracy, if you can hit it with a Tikka, you won't miss it with a CZ. Would I be happy with an off the rack CZ? Probably not, but that wasn't the question.

Personally I'd take an older BRNO like my 21H in 7x57 .......................not sure if that came in 9.3 but I've seen 8x57's...............Harold

went with the tikka

decided on the Tikka t3 hunter in 270 cal. My reasons where the main one tikka has detatchable mag, lighter, and supposed to be a better trigger. Pick it up next week cant wait thanks for you inputs
