Hello to All!

Would like to say "Hi" to everyone.
I am new to this site, and would like to say that it is quite an impressive forum.
I think it is very nice that one can chat directly to the dealers and request specific arms/ammo to be ordered, etc.
We lived in Australia for a while, and over there it is very difficult to acquire firearms. The bad guys ("crime" in Aussie slang) all have them, but good luck to you if you want to have a gun, even a .22 rifle to take with you camping. When I enquired about this after our first 6 months there, the local police told me that I would have to have a gun safe/lock box welded into my vehicle and inspected and approved by them in order to take a gun camping...:p So, it is nice to see that some sanity prevails in Canada about firearms.

I do have a question, and I hope someone here can help.
I am looking for a CZ 550 FS (full wood stock) rifle in 30/06 and 308 caliber. I have checked several of the dealers' websites but can't seem to find one for sale in Canada.
Does anyone know if these rifles are stocked somewhere in Canada?

Thanks!

I tried to buy a CZ 550, not an FS, back in December. From my experience, nobody keeps much stock of any CZ's, never mind an FS. There is also only one distributor of CZ sport arms as well and every dealer you've enquired with thus far has enquired with them. If you are willing to pay a little more, I would talk to Prophet River, they may find one in the States and import it for you. Otherwise, get in an order with your local CZ dealer and wait until next May and if you're lucky, it may come as early as late April. I don't know what attracts you to CZ, if it's the commercial Mauser action or have a affinity for early twentieth century military rifles, but if you're willing to forgo the full stock, I know there are 30-06's available.

Thanks very much for that info. I have had several CZ guns, some handguns and others rifles, and I find they are very well made, and accurate. For the money, it is rated very highly. I have never owned a full stock rifle, but have always liked the "look"- so that is why am after the FS. I will give Prophet River a shout-many thanks again for the advice!

Hi there,

I wanted a CZ550 FS in .308. I asked Wanstalls and they ordered one for me. It took a long time (several months) but it did come. After I had mine on order, I did see one come and go at Prophet River. I've also seen them on the Canada Ammo site from time to time. As for being "in stock" you might look at Elwood Epps as well. They seem to stock everything. (Just checked right now and no dice)

Good luck in your search!

IRG has stock in .308 and 6.5x55 http://www.irunguns.com/catalog.bolt-action-rifles?&manufacturer=314&page=1

A consideration for you may be that the CZ550 action comes in a long action length only, it will not be any shorter or lighter in .308, although the .308 will certainly perform more efficiently out of a 20" barrel than will .30-06.

The .308 & .243 550s come with a detachable mag as well, if that's of any importance to you.

If you're not strongly wedded to a .30 cal, I would further suggest a 6.5x55 model - it would be suitable to hunt anything in Canada short of Alaskan Moose, Grizzly or Polar Bears, and is very well matched to the CZ550FS, I dare say moreso than .30-06 out of a 20" barrel. There's a used one on the EE right now for a fair price.

I'd also try calling the distributor in Canada (FN Sports), just ask them where they've sent .30-06 and .308s to recently. Wolverine Supplies deals with CZ as well, and are one of the best dealers in Canada.

I just ordered my CZ550 FS from IRG last month and it's finally arriving on Tuesday (Excited!) After searching around, IRG is by far the cheapest after all the taxes. However, if you must order it from Canada, I found that http://hubsports.com/ will order it in for you at $1200 for the .308 version.

A note with the difference between the 2 calibres:

.308 version has a removable magazine where you cannot top load into it when it is loaded in the rifle. The 30-06 version is the fix boxed magazine that can be top loaded.
If you are looking for a reloading experience that is similar to the kar98k mauser that it is based on, go with 30-06 or even the 6.5x55.

Good god, I should say they would - that's about 20% over Canadian retail. They go for $1k or so here. Any dealer that orders from FN Sports can order one, there's no reason I could see to pay a 20% premium.

Congrats on the new rifle! Love to see a range report in the hunting rifle section if you get the chance.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful comments! I have contacted Prophet River and left them a message and will check with P&D and Bashaw also. Thanks again!!!
