Just finished twisting on a NEA muzzle brake onto the end of my 58, and when engaged with the index pin the brake is loose and wobbley. Is there shims available separately to tighten the play up? Seems to me this is something that maybe should have come with the brake?

That's normal for a VZ muzzle device, OEM or aftermarket. They were never intended to fit tight to the front sight tower with the detent engaged.

Some guys remove material from the end of the brake to index it. I've never noticed any significant difference from a tight or loose muzzle device accuracy wise.

Mines a tad loose. Still shoots way more accurately than a rifle of this type should. I have heard of a few people using thread tape just to tighten things up, but it probably doesn't do anything for the performance of the gun.

Yellow Gas Telfon Tape
;)
Works wonders but just like Stevo says minor play won't do anything noticable accuracy wise.

Mine has slight wiggle, I filed the back of it to index properly but after a few cleanings it has developed a tiny bit of play. The bore of the brake is always sufficiently large for the bullet to pass through with no chance of contact.

How much play? Is it just turning a bit on the threads or actual side to side wobble?

I took some measurements:

.310" bullet
.325" Bore clearance in brake
.07" Side to side play - total both sides

As it stood I couldn't shoot this, so I decided to dress down the rear of the brake so that it now fits hand tight, but still indexing on the top pin. Now there is zero play and alignment is spot on.
This thing is getting very near to
Thanks everyone for your comments.

I put the CZ military style muzzle break that came on my new CSA carbine on my CZ858 (the CSA breaks are newly made not surplus) It fits so dam perfect very tight no wobble , the best fitting break i have ever tried on the 858 by far .. Also the CZ military style break is the most effective one in my opinion .. Now i just buy another one , i wonder if any dealers sell the newly made CSA breaks ? If you guys dont want your break to wobble and rattle around this is the solution ...

Could very well be the case in this instance but I have not had a chance to use it yet. I'm looking to admire the flash from my shorty for a little while first though.
