I'm looking to buy a CZ-75 Pre-B, but I know there been a big issue about the magazines compatibility.
I have heard a lot of mixed review about how the new generation of CZ mags will work and others say it won't work at all.
If you can help clear up this misunderstanding, it would be a great help.

Thanks :D

I had issues with after market mags (ProMag I believe). Close but not close enough. True CZ75 mags (i.e. CZ Custom Shop) work no problem. If we can catch BC Riders attention, he once mentioned that the PRE-B mag well needs to be relieved a little in order to take B mags.

Some later pre Bs will accept B magazines, but others will not. The issue is the pre B magazine has a rounded front edge whilst the B magazine is more squared. Insert the B mag into the the pre B well and note how far it goes, it will actually go in almost all the way. Take a round file (about 8mm dia.) and start removing material from the mag well to make the opening more square. Work both sides the same amount and insert the magazine often to gauge your progress. It does not take very long before the magazine will seat. After the magazine seats properly, clean all the filings out of the mag well.

One furthur follow up question: I've heard on czforums.com that SP01 mags may fit a pre-B CZ75. Are you able to comment on this?
Thanks again

That is true. Since the SP-01 magazines are produced by the factory, they are in spec with all of the 75 variants.

I also recently bought what was presumed to be a CZ-brand magazine from another person here.
Not sure if it was for 75/85 or SP-01, but it fit.

The end point of this discussion is, go for the SP-01 mags (and please PM me if you find a cheap source) or, when you get mags that don't fit,
have your 'smith open the top of the magwell up a bit. Or do yourself with a dremel (I have NOT done this).

As I understand it there are three versions of the 75B series. the true PreB's, the transitional models and the 75B frame as we know it. The earlier PreB's and some of the transitional models had tighter mag wells and mag channels. I had an 85 Combat made in 1988 and it was a true PreB. I took a dremel and opened up the magwell and channel. Once this was done I was able to use the newer mags with no problem. At some point, obviously after 1988 CZ changed the dimensions of the mag channel to what it is today.

I know my 1988 85 Combat was a dream to shoot and I regret selling it but it came with the round cut in the slide for the rear sight so I sold it as I was not happy with the sights on the gun.

Hope this helps. If you have a dremel find where the new mags are binding and cut awys enough metal to allow them to fit in the gun. Once the well is opened up the new CZ mags will work in the gun.

Take Care

Bob
