Looking to buy a cz pistol, 9mm which is best: the sp01 or the 85.
Not sure what the main differences between them are but I've noticed the sp01 has a rail on the front for mounting laser/light.

Also what makes other steel Frame guns that are more expensive (hk usp, Walthers, etc) better over the cz pistols? Is it just in the brand or are they really worth the extra money.

I'm looking for a well made and fast shooting accurate gun out of the box that has potential to be a good competition gun as well. Cz seems to make a very good product.

what kind of competition are you looking at? that will partially dictate what you buy as it has to be legal to compete

Well opinions will vary but having handled and shot Sigs, CZ's and HK's I'd say that mostly it's the name on the side that makes the high price options more expensive. The CZ does just as well as the others provided you like how it fits your hand.

A great all 'rounder would be the CZ85 Combat. Or if they make it into Canada sometime soon the new "plain" 75 Shadow without the short regular length dust cover would be ideal for either IPSC or IDPA or any other pistol competition short of pure bullseye matches.

Looking for mostly a good range gun that I could potentially use in the production class comps. Don't like the idea of strapping huge ugly apparatuses and red dots to my pistol. I like keeping things simple. In terms of internals and functionality which of the 2 pistols is best, are there major differences between the 75 sp01 shadow and the 85 combat? The frames look identical and both are updated versions of the 75b, just trying to sort it all out.

Going to advise you to go with the Shadow, trigger is great out of the box. If you want an easy fix to make it even better throw in a 13 lb hammer spring. Nicest trigger in my collection. Front fibreoptic against a blacked out rear is excellent for quickly picking up your target. On the plus side for the CZ85 the rear sight is adjustable. Its also likely a bit lighter, up to you if this is a plus or minus. Both great firearms and every bit as good as any you mentioned. I would imagine CZ may be less expensive because they can make it cheaper in Czech Republic compared to Sig in Germany, etc.IMHO. Do the research, you can't go wrong with either one. The 85 should also have a good trigger as I believe they also do not have a firing pin block.

I have both Sig's and a CZ .
My 226 is the most accurate handgun I own out of the box,but the CZ is a real close
2nd and it cost a whole lot less.
I paid about $700 US for the Sig and $299 US for the CZ used. The CZ shoots almost as good and feels better in the hand and has a good natural point of Aim.
Just my opinion.....

The frames aren't quite identical. The Shadow has a slightly higher cut on the beavertail so you can more comfortably get a slightly higher hold on the gun. Both share the lack of a firing pin block so both gain a little improvement in trigger feel over the other models with the block. But this makes both of them slightly more liable to an AD if the gun is fumbled and dropped onto a hard surface.... which is why the firing pin block was added to the others. Finally the Shadow comes with the slightly more crisp competition hammer where the sear hook is a little less deep and the angle a little more "square on" to the pivot pin. All else being equal this produces less creep of the hammer and produces a lighter and crisper trigger feel.

But the big difference in the frames are at the front. The SP-01 models have the full length dust cover with the rail mount. The 85 has the shorter and lighter non rail mount.

The ONLY downside to the Shadow is the weight that comes with that dust cover and rail metal. If you have IDPA in your area it means that you have to get the lightest possible grips from a specialty source to meet the SSP class weight restriction. And on some guns where the wall thickness tolerances of the slide and frame are both on the thick side of the allowable tolerance you simply can't meet the weight. That's where the models like the 85Combat with the shorter frame shine as they can be used equally well in both IPSC and IDPA.

But this certainly will not be your last handgun. So if you don't have IDPA in your area by all means buy the Shadow. There is a very good reason why they are so popular. The shoot well and fit almost everyone's hands well. On the other hand the shorter and lighter frame on my CZ75 pre b model produces a slightly nicer balanced feel in my hand. It's a small thing but if you pick up a plain 75 or 85 and then the SP-01 model most folks would find that the SP-01 feels a little front heavy. But unless you do this back and forth in a A-B sort of comparison it's not something you think about.

For a range gun, I went with a CZ75B-SA. I like the feel of the SA trigger, and it has an ambi safety for lefties.
