This is the follow-up to my "Please help me choose a CZ 75" post...

Having decided on the SP-01 Shadow, I've been hunting down some of the other stuff I'm going to need (particularly for IPSC). Here's what I'm hoping you can help me with:

Holsters. Blade-Tech has already been recommended to me. I see that there's a Classic OWB DOH and also a Pro Series Speed Rig. It's not obvious to me where the differences lie, so any recommendations? Any better choices for the money?

Belts. Blade-Tech, CR, and Double Alpha all seem to have over-priced bands of nylon and Velcro. I'm assuming there's not much to choose between them - is this so?

Magazines. CZ mags are $60 and Mec-Gar are $45. There's also a Tanfoglio chrome-plated mag for $58. Are they all good? Do they need protection from continually falling onto the ground?

Mag pouches. These seem to vary wildly. Does the SP-01 need a single- or double-stack pouch, and do you have any specific recommendations?

Grips. The standard grips are rubber. I've been advised to find a heavily serrated aluminum set. Any favourites? (they have to look good too!).

Have I missed anything? Thanks!

CRSpeed mag pouches will perfectly work for both single and double stack mags (CZ75 has a double stack mag).
Also, go with full metal body magazines from Tanfoglio (much better quality than new CZ75 mags with plastic bottoms)
Get spare slide lock (will brake at 20K-ish rounds), extractor with spring (you will need one at about 20K-ish), fiber optic inserts (red or green, your preference), 13lbs main spring for lighter DA pull, 13lbs recoil spring if you decide to load your own ammo (124 and 147 are great, but with 147 you will need a higher front sight).

And you also will need a lot of AMMO - practice, practice and practice :)

If you go to IPSC, get your self a good timer (shot timer).

As for grips - I tried several aluminum (from thin to thick) and at the end, came back to the factory rubber grips :) know several guys who had the same exprience :)))

+1 on all counts!

For belt I am pretty satisfied with the Black Scorpion velcro belts. They are stiffer than my old CRSpeed belts.

I have had no problem at all with Bladetech DOH.

As for grips I would suggest you shoot your CZ a lot before deciding to swap out the grips. It is very personal.

+1 on slide stop and fibre replacements. Both have gone down for me while shooting.

I tried the aluminum grips on mine ended up going back to the rubber ones fill my hand better. I went to a 13lb main spring in mine also changed out for the competition hammer and short disconnecter. My DA pull went from being off the scale estimated about 10.5 lbs to 7lbs. The short disconnect dramatically shortened the reset on mine as well cut travel by more the 1/2. For holsters depends on game you want to play I am planning on getting the DAA PDR pro for ipsc and the DAA Racer MAG pouches as well. For IDPA I am planning on getting a Solely Canadian concealment holster and pouches. I had a bladetech but sold it to my brother it was good but the DAA is a much better holster for a bit more money. I also second/triple what ever the recommendation is it to get spare fibres and slide stop neither has failed me yet but I did have a fibre break on another gun during my black badge course. Also big +1 to get a timer huge value added to training.

fibre optic, spare trigger return spring (mine broke within 2 mos), slide stop for matches, MeC-Gar 10 rnd mags from Brownells only $25 ea work great, DOH holster on BOSS hanger from Ben Stoeger (much nicer than my 1911 DAA PDP pro), I would put the money for grips toward ammo

The slide stop will break after thousands of rounds. I have 2. One that I use for practice and one that I swap in before competition.

I have the Blade Tech holster. I am not happy with how it fits with a competition belt. I had to use 2 zip straps to help hold it in place. I would recommend looking at the Ghost line of products. I have their mag pouches and love them. The are very similar to CR Speed pouches, but cheaper. Ghost will ship to Canada for $15 and are very good with customs declarations. Their rig sets are also on sale right now https://www.ghostholsterdirect.com/product-category/shop/holster-shop/ . I wouldn't bother with The One or The Ultimate at this point. If you want to spend the extra go ahead, but it will not save you very much time on the draw at this point.

Brownells does have MecGar mags, but I have read about some people have issues with the slide staying open after the last shot with them. I bought my extra mags CZ while in the US from CZ Custom. As we get closer to Black Friday and Xmas there should be mags on sale around here soon. Mags falling to the ground are usually not an issue. If you shoot indoors on cement, that will take a toll on them.

Thank you!

I have a Shadow and some ammo on the way, so at least that will get me out to the range. Can't wait! Looks like I have some more reading to do before I start ordering accessories, but I haven't even taken the Black Badge course yet, so I think I have plenty of time. Thanks for the Black Friday tip...I tend to forget about that. Not sure I have the patience, though!

I also have to learn more about the IPSC divisions and rules. I don't want to start off competing with the hot-shot guys with thick cheque books, so I have to find my entry point. With that in mind, I don't want to go changing hammers and things if it kicks me out of the novice level. Lots to learn!

Thanks again for your help,

PD

This is the follow-up to my "Please help me choose a CZ 75" post...

Having decided on the SP-01 Shadow, I've been hunting down some of the other stuff I'm going to need (particularly for IPSC). Here's what I'm hoping you can help me with:

Holsters. Blade-Tech has already been recommended to me. I see that there's a Classic OWB DOH and also a Pro Series Speed Rig. It's not obvious to me where the differences lie, so any recommendations? Any better choices for the money? Buy what you like and what feels comfortable. I like the DOH but use a CR. The difference in moot in competition IMO.
Belts. Blade-Tech, CR, and Double Alpha all seem to have over-priced bands of nylon and Velcro. I'm assuming there's not much to choose between them - is this so? I've used CR and DA, both are good but I prefer the CR for no real reason I can define...
Magazines. CZ mags are $60 and Mec-Gar are $45. There's also a Tanfoglio chrome-plated mag for $58. Are they all good? Do they need protection from continually falling onto the ground? I haven't used the Mec-Gar and have the factory CZ's- I haven't broken one yet but I only shoot outside, if your on a concrete floor your mileage may vary...I've seen the Tangfo's and they definitely seem like the best but I have not run them and they aren't cheap by the time base pads are added, still I'd like to try them.
Mag pouches. These seem to vary wildly. Does the SP-01 need a single- or double-stack pouch, and do you have any specific recommendations? I like the CR versa pouches but I use the DA racers currently on this platform but both work well- not a fan of the DA race masters (aluminum).
Grips. The standard grips are rubber. I've been advised to find a heavily serrated aluminum set. Any favourites? (they have to look good too!). I found a set of aggressive aluminum grips that are thin, stylish and grip amazingly well. Definitely the best thing other than ammo I've ever bought for it.
Have I missed anything? Thanks!

Input in red.
Also, buy ammo in bulk or buy reloading supplies in bulk- you'll need it :)
IF you feel like messing with it a 13 pound hammer spring with an extended firing pin is cheap and easy to pop in (all OFM)- it took my trigger pull from 12 to 8 pounds in DA mode.
You could try a lighter recoil spring as well (I use 13lb for factory ammo and 11 pound for 130pf reload ammo).
None of this is needed except the ammo but a lot of guys do it.

Cheers

I have the Blade Tech holster. I am not happy with how it fits with a competition belt. I had to use 2 zip straps to help hold it in place.

How do you have it mounted? I have mine on a teklok and it doesn't move (though it has enough play I can force it to move).

I also use Ghost International mag pouches and they are fine. BTW there is a Canadian retailer, Double Tap Sports.

My holster (and the mag pouch that came with) are the ones that can fit basically any belt size. You move the plastic piece to wherever you want to snug up to the belt. The issues arise when you try and remove the gun from the holster. The upwards motion puts strain between the belt and the plastic piece and eventually the plastic piece ends up under/behind the belt. Once that happens there is way too much play in the holster and the gun won't come out properly. Here is the set that I bought http://www.alflahertys.com/products/blade-tech-idpa-competition-shooters-pack-for-cz75-sp-01-shadow-holx0086idpapko0920blkrh

I removed the plastic piece and zip tied over the top of the holster and then under the bottom of the belt. It is very snug now (but looks a bit ghetto)

Learn how to shoot before attempting the course since they will put you through drills that you must pass. Learn accuracy at 7, 10, 15 and 20 yards.

You will start in Production in IPSC. It's a fairly level playing field in the division. There is only so much that can be done to the gun before it's considered to be Standard division, so deep pockets won't help.

Sounds like fun! I think I'm probably not too bad for a beginner...hope I'm not tempting fate by saying that.

Thanks, this is certainly useful. I'll go back and read the rules again, although these days it's a rare talent that can write anything that doesn't need prior knowledge to comprehend.

Hey guys. New to the Forum and I am looking at buying my first pistol for just shooting targets. Was thinking about buying a CZ 75 SP-01. From what I have been reading this is rated as a pretty good pistol. Yes / No ?

Welcome to Canadiangunnutz. This thread is specific to accessories for the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, so you will get a better response by starting a new thread on the subject of choosing a first pistol for target shooting (after searching for previous threads on this subject).
